Introduced in the early 2000s and redesigned into a second generation in 2016, the XC90 is Volvo's mid-size SUV model, and the brand's largest vehicle.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2020, Volvo makes minor changes to the XC90, as it has done every year since the current model's intro in 2016. The most notable update this year is a slightly larger battery for the T8 PHEV model, which brings nominal improvements in EV driving range and fuel economy.
Available Trims
Volvo offers the XC90 in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trims. Momentum starts with a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine dubbed T5. Optional in Momentum and standard in R-Design and Inscription is a turbo- and supercharged T6 engine. All three can be optioned with the T8 plug-in hybrid setup, which is also the XC90's most potent variant.
AWD and an 8-speed automatic transmission are standard in all configurations.
Momentum and Inscription come in 6- and 7-seat models, while R-Design comes only as a 7-seater.
Standard Features
Inside, Momentum trim comes with cruise control, active noise control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, satellite radio, four-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, leatherette upholstery, heated/power-adjustable front seats with lumbar, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel.
Exterior and mechanical features comprise engine auto stop/start, a power tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, fog lights, adaptive LED headlights with washers and cornering lights, and 18-inch wheels.
Standard safety items are forward collision mitigation, lane keeping assist, a park assist camera, front and rear park assist, and tire pressure monitoring.
R-Design adds navigation, road sign information, rear side sun shades, leather upholstery, sport seats with four-way lumbar and cushion extensions, shift paddles, a leather shift lever, R-Design styling cues, and 20-inch wheels.
Finally, Inscription brings ventilated front comfort seats, ash wood dash trim, trim-specific styling elements, exterior door handle lighting, and trim-specific wheels.
Key Options
A Momentum Plus pack bundles heated wiper blades, the pilot assist driving assist system, blind spot monitoring, 360-degree camera views, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and a garage door opener.
An R-Design Premium package also boasts heated wipers, blind spot system, heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats, and adds power-folding rear headrests. Pilot assist, 360-degree cameras, and garage door opener are split into a Premium Plus group that also brings a head-up display.
Inscription opens up the option of massaging front seats.
Fuel Economy
Volvo's fuel consumption estimates for the XC90 are 11.2/8.3 L/100 km (city/highway) with the T5 powertrain, and 12.2/8.7 for the T6.
The T8 PHEV is rated 9.1/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway) when running as a gas-electric hybrid, and 4.0 in EV mode.
Competition
With the XC90, Volvo competes with vehicles like the BMW X5, Acura's MDX, the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz's GLE-Class, the Lexus RX, Cadillac's XT6, the Lincoln Aviator, and Infiniti's QX60.
This vehicle has not yet been reviewed
