For 2008, the Volvo XC90 adds the Sport, initially a limited-run special vehicle in 2007, as a regular addition to the line-up. While the 2007 model was offered only with the 4.4-litre V8, the 2008 Sport also offers the 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder.
Now available as an option on all models is Volvo's Blind Spot Information System, which uses digital cameras mounted on the side mirrors to determine if an obstacle is in the vehicle's blind spots and, if so, it illuminates a warning light.
The XC90 is available with a 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder engine or 4.4-litre V8; both engines use a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode, and all models use all-wheel drive. All models are available in five- or seven-passenger seating.
Features on the 3.2 five-seat include 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic dual-zone climate control, comfort chassis, front and rear fog lights, front and rear skid plates, headlight washers, heated mirrors with puddle lamps, roof rails, roof spoiler, tinted glass, heated "leatherette" and cloth seats with power driver's adjustment and memory, fold-flat front passenger seat, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat, cargo net, cruise control, front and rear reading lamps, rain-sensing wipers, rear wiper, outside temperature display, tilt and telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, and CD stereo.
The 3.2 seven-seat adds a power sunroof, leather upholstery, forward-facing third-row seats, and integrated second-row centre child booster seat.
The V8 models add bi-Xenon headlamps, six-CD stereo, aluminum roof rails, power passenger seat, colour-coordinated wheel arches, polished exhaust tips, power sunroof, and privacy glass.
The 3.2 Sport models build on the 3.2 models with 19-inch alloy wheels, overhead-mounted seatbelt reminder lights, power sunroof, sport chassis, sport-tuned suspension and steering, sport grille and exhaust tips, water-repellent exterior mirror glass, sport interior styling, sport wheel, sport instrument gauges, and sport floor mats.
The V8 Sport adds bi-Xenon headlamps, tinted glass, power passenger seat and six-CD stereo.
Featuring a lovely interior and numerous safety features, the XC90 has a good seating position and controls that fall easily to hand. The third row on the seven-passenger models is cramped for adults, but the seats fold flat, thanks to a clever system that tucks the seat cushions under the backrest to create a flat cargo floor. There's a lot of rear cargo space, but up-front small-item storage can be hard to find. The six-cylinder can have a noticeable response lag when it's asked for a burst of power at highway speeds; the V8 is creamy-smooth, powerful and quiet, and is costlier but more satisfying to drive.
