NEW FOR 2009:
- lower base price
- New turbocharged T6 model
- Optional navigation system receives software upgrades
- Optional dual rear screen entertainment system upgraded
Redesigned as an all-new model in 2008, the Volvo XC70 moves into 2009 with the addition of a new turbocharged T6 that is offered alongside the 3.2 model. While the new engine is based on the 3.2-litre, it's slightly smaller overall. Pricing for the 3.2 decreases from the 2008 level.
The optional navigation system receives Real Time Traffic updates; in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and in Vancouver in late 2008, the system will be better able to avoid traffic by customizing the drive route around known obstructions that have been digitally transmitted to the system's receiver. The optional dual screen rear entertainment system is updated with a larger screen, better visibility and folding wireless headphones.
The XC70 uses a 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder or 3.2-litre turbocharged six-cylinder, both with six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode, and electronically-controlled all-wheel drive.
Features on the 3.2 include 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, hill descent control, front and rear fog lamps, headlight washers, heated mirrors with puddle lights, rear skid plate, roof rails, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat, power driver's seat with memory, T-Tec upholstery, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, cargo cover, cruise control, outside temperature gauge, auto up/down on all windows, rear wiper/washer, tilt and telescopic wheel with audio controls, trip computer, variable intermittent wipers, and CD stereo.
The T6 adds 17-inch alloy wheels, power rear door child locks, power sunroof, leather upholstery, power passenger seat, retractable side-view mirrors, six-CD stereo and Sirius Satellite Radio.
Available options for the 3.2 include the Premium Package, which adds the leather upholstery, retractable side-view mirrors, rear power child locks and power passenger seat found on the T6.
Other available options include the Luxury Package of Four-C active chassis, dual Xenon Active Bending Headlights, front and rear parking assist, rain sensor, and either heated rear seats or dual-stage integrated booster cushions, plus ventilated front seats on the T5; the Convenience Package of rear privacy glass, garage door opener, speed-sensitive steering, power-operated tailgate, grocery bag holder, cargo locking, humidity sensor, sunglasses holder, mass movement sensor and level sensor; and DynAudio Package with six-CD and Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound, along with Sirius Satellite Radio on the 3.2.
The XC70 offers a luxurious interior, comfortable seats, considerable cargo room and good overall practicality. Blurring the line between a wagon and an SUV, this may be the perfect compromise, spoiled only by fuel economy that may not be quite in tune with today's price at the pumps.
