For 2008, the XC70 is completely redesigned into its third generation.
Like the C70 upon which it is based, the XC70 uses a 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder with six-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the front-wheel drive C70, the XC70 uses Volvo's electronically-controlled all-wheel drive system with Instant Traction, and features hill descent control, which manages the car's engine and braking systems to maintain a maximum speed of 10 km/h when descending a steep hill.
Changes include a new painted nose, larger headlamps and grille, larger air intakes, chrome accents and roof rail integrated into the A-pillar moulding. The rear features large taillamps and a large glass liftgate similar to that on the C30, with larger Volvo logo.
Like the V70, the XC70 features a new height-adjustable integrated child booster cushion installed in both outer rear seats. This "world-first" feature can be set at two heights, allowing children of different size to see out the windows while ensuring that each child is in the best position to benefit from the seatbelt. The side impact protection system has been strengthened, there are new dual-chamber side impact airbags in the front seat, and the curtain airbags are 60 mm longer. Among the available options is the Volvo Personal Car Communicator; within 100 metres, the key fob can communicate with the car to determine if the alarm has gone off or if an intruder is inside the vehicle.
The XC70 uses a 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode, and featuring all-wheel drive.
Standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear fog lights, front and rear skid plates, headlight washers, heated mirrors, roof rails, tinted glass, heated cloth and T-Tec seats, power driver's seat with memory, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat, leather-wrapped tilt and telescopic steering wheel, auto-dimming rear-view mirror with compass, cruise control, cargo cover, front and rear reading lamps, floor mats, express up/down on all windows, intermittent wipers, rear washer/wiper, trip computer and CD stereo.
Available options include adaptive cruise control with collision warning, blind spot information system, speed-sensitive steering, active bi-Xenon headlamps, power sunroof, park assist, premium stereo and navigation system.
