For 2007, the Volvo V70 drops the T5 model, and now offers only the 2.4i, 2.5T, 2.5T AWD and R models.
The 2.5T AWD receives Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (all other models use stability and traction control), and when equipped with the Sport Package, also receives active bi-Xenon headlamps that follow the curve of the road when the wheels are turned.
The Sport Package on all models now includes a new spoiler, sport steering wheel, gear shift knob and a watch-style instrument panel similar to that used on the S80 and R model; a rearview mirror with integrated compass, and a rear-door power child lock is standard on the R and included in the optional Convenience Package on all other models.
The V70 wagon is available as the 2.4, with 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated inline five-cylinder; the 2.5T, with turbocharged 2.5-litre inline five-cylinder that makes 208 hp; and as the R, also with the turbocharged 2.5-litre, beefed up to 300 horses.
The 2.4 uses a five-speed manual transmission that can be optioned to a five-speed automatic, and includes 16-inch alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and electronic brake force distribution, rear fog light, headlight washers, heated cloth seats, mechanical height-adjustable driver’s seat, fold-flat front passenger seat, 60/40 folding rear seat, leather-wrapped tilt and telescopic wheel, cargo cover, cruise control, dual-zone electronic climate control, heated mirrors, intermittent rear washer/wiper, and CD player.
The 2.5T has the same features as the 2.4, but comes exclusively with a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.
The 2.5T AWD adds Dynamic Stability and Traction Control System, emergency brake assist, power driver’s seat with memory, and power sunroof.
The R uses a close-coupled six-speed manual transmission that can be optioned to a six-speed automatic with manual shift mode, all-wheel drive, and adds 17-inch alloy wheels, four-piston Brembo brake calipers, active chassis, speed-sensitive steering, bi-Xenon headlamps, roof spoiler, front fog lamps, leather sport seats, power passenger seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, garage door opener, rain-sensing wipers, laminated water-repellant side glass, and premium six-CD stereo.
The V70 is the quintessential Volvo wagon: it’s practical, the sleek styling suits it, and it’s stuffed with the company’s usual range of safety features. Interior space is sufficient that this can be considered a viable alternative to a small SUV; if you still want a bigger vehicle’s ground clearance and chunky looks, the V70 also transforms into the rugged XC70. And if you like fiery along with family-friendly, the V70 R should fit the bill.
