Volvo knows that people love their XC60 and XC90 SUV's, and the V70 on off-road steroids XC70 has also been popular. But some buyers don't want the extra size of the XC70, and the XC60's a little bit too truck-like for them. So Volvo gives them the V60 Cross Country. It's a V60 with some extra height, some skidplates, and maybe a bit more of what passes for style these days. If it all seems a bit crowded for such a small automaker, it probably is. But if it means another wagon on the market, then that's a good thing. The V60 CC was all new for 2015, so is unchanged for 2016.
The Cross Country isn't intended to traverse the Rubicon trail, or to take on an expedition through the Darien Gap. What it's designed to do is to make the dirt road to the cottage a little more comfortable, and to not get stuck in the snow. Much like the Audi A4 Allroad or Subaru Outback without the awkward styling of the BMW X4. It will do both of those just fine, and add a decent dollop of luxury to top off the safety Volvo has built their name on.
The V60 Cross Country comes in two trims, T5 AWD starting at $44,550, or T5 AWD Premier for $2,200 more. T5 means a 2.5L inline five-cylinder making 250 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. Beside that is a six-speed automatic and Volvo's all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring. Underneath are 18-inch wheels. There is a 7.0-inch touchscreen, power heated seats, automatic wipers, power headrests, and rear park assist. The Premier gets leather seats, keyless start, and an improved information display in the dash. Both get Volvo's City Safe system, which works to prevent collisions at speeds under 50 km/h. A Climate package adds heated rear seats, windshield, and steering wheel, and navigation with Harman Kardon premium sound is also available
As normal for Volvo, there is a very extensive list of active safety features available in the Technology package. Driver Alert which warns you if you're tired, Collision Warning which will completely stop the car if it feels you weren't going to, lane departure warnings, radar cruise, and a feature that will read road signs and show them on the dash. Blind spot warnings and park assist are in a separate Blind Spot Information System package.
The V60 Cross Country is rated at 11.8 L/100 km city and 8.6 highway.
