- 3.2 AWD model replaced with 3.2 FWD model
- S80 V8 replaced with S80 Executive

For 2009, the S80 undergoes a major change to its line-up, with the addition of a new model and a switch of its base model's configuration. The 3.2-litre model, previously available only with all-wheel drive, now comes strictly in front-wheel. A new model, the T6 AWD, now slots into the middle of the line-up, while the V8 AWD becomes the V8 AWD Executive, which builds on the previous model with 18-inch alloy wheels and upgraded interior.
All models also receive Bluetooth hands-free connectivity as standard equipment, and the optional navigation system is enhanced with Real Time Traffic updates; in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and in Vancouver in late 2008, the system will be better able to avoid traffic by customizing the drive route around known obstructions that have been digitally transmitted to the system's receiver.
Engine choices in the S80 are now a 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder in the 3.2 FWD; a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder in the T6 AWD; and a 4.4-litre V8 in the Executive. All engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.
Features on the 3.2 FWD include 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear fog lights, headlight washers, heated mirrors with puddle lights, power rear door child locks, electrically-folding rear head restraints, fold-flat front passenger seat, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, heated leather seats with driver and passenger power adjustment and driver's side memory, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, cruise control, heated washer nozzles, garage door opener, outside temperature gauge, auto up/down on all windows, tilt and telescopic wheel with audio controls, trip computer, variable intermittent wipers, and CD stereo.
The T6 AWD adds power sunroof and six-CD stereo with Sirius Satellite Radio.
The V8 AWD Executive adds 18-inch alloy wheels, Personal Car Communicator with keyless drive, Active Bending Lights, premium sound system with Dolby Pro Logic II, perforated soft leather heated and cooled seats with massage function, walnut wood inlays, wood steering wheel, analog clock, illuminated sill plates, and rain-sensing wipers.
Available options for the 3.2 and T6 are a Security Package of Collision Avoidance Package, retractable side mirrors, Personal Car Communicator (which can indicate the presence of an intruder hiding in the vehicle based on his heartbeat), mass movement sensor, level sensor and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS); a Luxury Package of perforated leather sports seats, Four-C active chassis, dual Xenon Active Bending Headlights, front and rear parking assist, rain sensor and heated seats; and a DynAudio Package with six-CD premium stereo with Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound processing; and stand-alone options of a navigation system, rear seat entertainment system, and two 18-inch wheel choices.
Option choices for the S80 Executive are the Luxury Package of Four-C active chassis system and front and rear parking assist; Security Package of Collision Avoidance Package, BLIS, retractable mirrors, mass movement sensor and level sensor; and stand-alone navigation system and dual screen rear entertainment system.
While many manufacturers are cutting back on their top-line models, Volvo has enhanced its flagship sedan with a new model, the choice of a front-wheel drive option, and a new luxury version of the V8 model, which gains extra features but remains at the 2008 price level.
