For 2009, the S40 receives new upgrades to its list of standard equipment, along with a new optional R-Design Package. The R-Design adds 17-inch alloy wheels, dual Xenon Active Bending Headlights, skirt kit, rear spoiler, chrome mirror caps, interior aluminum inlays, sport instrument dials, sport pedals, power driver's seat, two-tone sport seats, R-Design emblems and, on the T5 model, a power passenger seat. A software upgrade to the optional HDD Navigation System with Real Time Traffic, Remote Control and Map Care offers more scrolling and viewing features, and in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and in Vancouver in late 2008, the system will be better able to avoid traffic by customizing the route around known obstructions that have been digitally transferred to the system's receiver.
The entry-level sedan in Volvo's line-up, the S40 is also the basis for the V50 wagon and C30 hatchback. Engine choices are a 2.4-litre five-cylinder engine in the 2.4i, and a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder in the T5. The 2.4i bases with a five-speed manual transmission, the T5 with a six-speed; both can be optioned to a five-speed automatic with manual shift mode. The 2.4i comes in front-wheel drive only; the T5 is available with front- or all-wheel drive.
Features on the 2.4i include 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning,, "comfort chassis", front and rear fog lights, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, T-Tec upholstery, heated front seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, cruise control, floor mats, outside temperature display, auto up/down on all windows, tilt and telescopic column with wheel-mounted audio controls, variable intermittent wipers, and CD stereo.
The T5 adds dual-zone automatic climate control, power sunroof, three-spoke leather-wrapped wheel, interior aluminum inlays, folding front passenger seat, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, trip computer, and high-performance sound system.
The T5 AWD adds "dynamic chassis suspension".
The S40's ride is firm, but handling is light and quick, and while it's not a true enthusiast's car, it's fun to drive. Both engines work well in this package, and there's no turbo lag on the T5. The seats are comfortable, but there's not a lot of space for small item storage, and the heater and stereo controls are small and fiddly. Buyers who want more cargo space can opt for the V50 wagon version.
