VW introduced the second-generation of its mid-size Touareg two years ago and the four-door, five-passenger SUV continues relatively unchanged for 2013. A 280-hp 3.6L V6 or a fuel-efficient and torquey (406 lb-ft) 240-hp 3.0L turbocharged V6 diesel are the engine choices. Either mill is mated to an eight-speed automatic. All-wheel-drive is standard. The latest Touareg is lighter than its predecessor and still drives more like a big sedan than a sport utility; it always feels meaty from the driver’s seat, with a firm yet solid ride and luxuriously quiet highway cruising. The Touareg’s interior is feature-laden and well appointed, allowing VW to encroach on pricier rivals from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. In Comfortline, features include 18-inch alloy wheels, 60/40 split folding rear seats with recline, 8-way power front seats with manual lumbar, auto-dimming rear view mirror, automatic headlights, Bluetooth phone connectivity, automatic dual-zone climate control, cruise control, digital compass, airbags (front, front side, side curtain), fog lights, heated front seats, leather wrapped multifunction steering wheel and shift knob, MDI with iPod connectivity, multifunction trip computer, power heated side mirrors, power tailgate, privacy glass, rain sensing wipers, rear view camera, navigation, silver roof rails, and satellite radio. Highline adds 12-way power front seats, Bi-Xenon heaadlights, slidable centre armrest, Burr-Walnut interior inserts, heated steering wheel, Homelink, keyless entry, push button start, driver's seat and mirror memory, panoramic sunroof, and power rear seat backrest release. Execline adds 20-inch alloy wheels, cargo cover, 620-watt Dynaudio with 12 speakers, heated rear seats, LED taillights, manual rear sunshades, park distance control, and power adjustable steering wheel with memory.
