For 2009, the Jetta line-up includes a new diesel variant and an updated turbocharged engine, and marks the return of the Jetta wagon. Three new trim lines have been introduced, as well: the Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The Jetta GLI is now known simply as the GLI and is covered in a separate section.
Both sedan and wagon are available with a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine, mated to a five-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic, or with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel, with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission. Both automatic transmissions have Tiptronic manual shift mode.
The Jetta sedan is further available with a revised 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that is also used in the all-new Tiguan, and which now features a timing chain.
Features on the Trendline models include 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, eight-way manually adjustable seats, CD stereo with auxiliary input jack, cruise control, exterior temperature display, front and rear reading lights, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, power windows, and remote central locking system. The wagon adds roof rails and rear washer/wiper.
The Comfortline adds 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior window trim, driver's seat with power recline, heated front seats, floor mats, front centre armrest with storage, heated washer nozzles, leather-wrapped wheel, and six-CD stereo.
The Highline adds leather seats, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, digital compass, trip computer, painted front and rear valences, power sunroof, and rear centre armrest with centre pass-through.
A new optional Sport package includes bi-Xenon headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, sport suspension and front fog lights.
A sharp-handling, nicely-sized and well-finished vehicle, the Jetta now offers buyers even more choices, with the introduction of the new diesel and the return of the station wagon.
