While the Jetta sedan is a redesigned model for 2006, it isn’t offered as a wagon, and Volkswagen found enough interest from Canadian buyers to continue to offer the 2005 Jetta wagon as a carryover model into 2006.
As the 2.0-litre and 1.8-litre turbocharged gasoline engines have been discontinued in the new Jetta sedan, the sole engine choice for the wagon is the 1.9-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel. Transmission choices are the base five-speed manual or optional five-speed automatic with Tiptronic.
Standard features include heated mirrors, roof rails, heated washer nozzles, variable intermittent wipers, air conditioning, cruise control, power locks with keyless entry, heated seats, 60/40 folding rear seat, four-spoke padded steering wheel, cargo cover and power windows.
Available options include luxury and leather packages, side curtain airbags and electronic stability program.
Although the new Jetta is an improvement over the old one, the carryover wagon is still a pleasure to drive, with direct and nimble steering and a well-finished interior. It’s relatively expensive for its size, but with its diesel engine, it’s the most fuel-efficient wagon in the country.
