Volkswagen’s Golf Wagon isn’t just the last remaining compact station wagon on the market, it also happens to be one of the most pragmatic vehicles on the planet. The German-designed, German-built family hauler offers up acres of luggage space, engaged driving dynamics, and build quality that tops its rivals.
2014 marks the final year in production for this body style before a new generation arrives next year. The most noticeable change to the Golf Wagon is that the desirable 2.0 TDI is now available on the base Trendline trim. Elsewhere, the Golf Wagon gains LED rear license plate illumination, and greater levels of standard equipment. The base Trendline trim also gets heated washer nozzles, heated seats, and front and rear floor mats, while the mid-level Comfortline adds standard Bluetooth. The high-value Wolfsburg edition returns again for 2014, featuring the same equipment as the Highline, plus proximity key and nav for less money than the Highline!
With the exception of the Golf Wagon Highline, all trims come with a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine that develops 170 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, and comes paired to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI turbodiesel, standard on the Highline and optional on all others, generates 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, and can be had with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. All are front-wheel drive.
The Golf Wagon Trendline includes16-inch steel wheels, 60/40 split folding rear seat, eight-way manually adjustable front seats, heated front seats, cloth upholstery, heated washer jets, 8-speaker AM/FM/CD audio with auxiliary input, black roof rails, cargo area cover, cargo tie down hooks, air conditioning, cruise control, exterior temperature display, front and rear map lights, front centre armrest storage, power heated side mirrors, and keyless entry.
Trendline TDI adds fog lights and engine block heater.
The optional Bluetooth package adds Bluetooth, leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift-knob, and hand brake, and a trip computer.
Comfortline adds 16-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth, chrome exterior window trim, chrome front grille accents, trip computer, MDI media device interface with iPod connectivity, and leather wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and hand brake lever.
Comfortline TDI adds engine block heater and fog lights (TDI).
The Comfortline wagon can be equipped with an optional panoramic sunroof.
Highline adds TDI engine, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic dual-zone climate control, digital compass, eight-way driver’s seat with power recline and manual lumbar support, leather upholstery, digital compass, engine block heater, front fog lights, panoramic sunroof, 10-speaker display audio system with six-disc CD changer and satellite radio.
The Highline can be optioned to include navigation system. It deletes the six-disc CD changer, replacing it with a single-disc CD player.
The Wolfsburg Edition deletes standard TDI engine, adds unique 17-inch alloy wheels, navigation, and KESSY proximity key system with push-button start.
