For 2012, the Volkswagen GTI adds a new, top-of-the-line Golf R edition. Changes to the rest of the GTI lineup are in trim, with new LED lighting and a standard iPod connector.
The performance version of the Volkswagen Golf, the GTI comes strictly as a hatchback, in two- or four-door configuration, which the company calls three- and five-door, each in a single trim line. The Golf R comes in four-door configuration. All models use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection engine with six-speed manual or optional six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox automatic transmission. The engine is high-output in the Golf R, which uses a six-speed manual transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive.
Features on the two-door include 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive automatic bi-xenon headlamps, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, variable intermittent wipers, intermittent rear wiper, heated washer nozzles, anti-theft alarm, cruise control, digital compass, front and rear floor mats, multifunction trip computer, footwell lighting, illuminated glovebox, illuminated vanity mirrors, brushed aluminum sport pedals, keyless entry, six-CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input and iPod connectivity, Sirius satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, heated eight-way manually-adjustable cloth sport seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seat with pass-through and centre armrest, three-spoke leather-wrapped sport wheel, and auto up/down windows.
The four-door adds power driver’s seat recline feature.
The Golf R adds 18-inch alloy wheels, lowered sport suspension, unique front and rear fascias and side skirts, race-styling steering wheel, eight-way partially-powered adjustable heated leather sport seats with lumbar support, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, black brake calipers with R logo, premium Dynaudio 300-watt sound system, keyless ignition, LED daytime running lights, power sunroof and navigation system.
