An all-new model in 2007, the Volkswagen Eos returns for 2008 unchanged.
Based on the Rabbit platform, the Eos is Volkswagen's first retractable hardtop coupe. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic Direct Shift Gearbox.
The roof is a five-piece unit that includes a panoramic glass sunroof that can be tilted or slid open when the roof is up, and a heated rear glass window. The panels separate and store themselves in the trunk in about 25 seconds. Cargo space is fairly generous, even with the roof stowed.
The Eos comes in a single trim line and includes 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, fog lamps, power-folding heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, adjustable intermittent wipers, heated washer nozzles, anti-theft alarm, cruise control, power locks with keyless entry, footwell lighting, CD/MP3 stereo, heated "leatherette" seats with eight-way manual driver's adjustment, tilt and telescopic wheel, and LED brake lights.
Safety features include a combined side-curtain and side-thorax supplemental airbag, and automatic rollover protection behind the rear seats.
The Eos looks good from any angle, with the top up or down, and its roof is a marvel of engineering with its opening sunroof. Like the Rabbit, it features sharp steering and a comfortable ride, and a body stiff enough that there's virtually no cowl shake. Both transmissions are fun to drive, including the superb Direct Shift Gearbox, with its almost imperceptible gear changes and lightning-fast response.
