CalgaryTacoma Dependability & quality far from previous years. June 23, 2018 TRD Sport 4x4 Double Cab
Overall Score
I’ve owned numerous Toyota’s over the years. This is my 4th pick up. I purchased this 2007 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 double cab new end of Dec 2006. All maintenance records are available. I like the style, look, ride & performance. However I’ve found the dependability isn’t what it once was and a good dealership is hard to find when it comes to the service aspect. Replaced Rear differential @ 30145 K, both rear shocks @ 33723 K, Transmission mount @ 47574 K, Wheel bearing assemblies both sides Front @ 155792 K, Wheel bearing assemblies both sides Rear @ 157227 K that’s just over $3100. To replace all wheel bearings… and get this the front brakes haven’t been replaced on this truck, very sad that wheel bearing assemblies would have to be changed before the front brake pads. Engine oil leak, several complaints of an oil leak RH side front of the engine about leak while under warranty couldn’t be found, once off warranty, the dealer found the leak at engine front cover. This is a big buck job to repair. Compass / outside temp gauge quit. Both rear park brake cables broke at the backing plate, prior to the need to replace the rear brake shoes. Other than that I still own this 07 Tacoma that is mainly an HI-way driver and currently at 221300 k

Issue: On a small number of trucks, the information on the tire and loading information label may be incorrect. This could lead you to overload the vehicle, inflate the tires incorrectly, and/or use the wrong rims and tires. This could lead to poor handling and/or a tire failure. Safety Risk: Poor handling or a tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your truck to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the tire and loading information label.

Issue: On certain trucks, the axle housing(s) may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the axle retaining nuts could loosen and detach. If this happens, the axle shaft(s) could separate from the axle housing(s). This could cause reduced braking and/or reduced vehicle stability. Note: This problem could cause noise, vibration and/or a differential oil leak. Safety Risk: Reduced braking can cause extended stopping distances. Reduced vehicle stability could cause a loss of control. Both issues could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your truck to a dealership to inspect the rear axle assembly and retighten the axle retaining nuts. If weld spatter is found, it will be removed. Any damaged axle components will be repaired or replaced, as necessary.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the steering wheel spiral cable assembly could disconnect. If this happens, the airbag (SRS) warning lamp would turn on, and the driver-front airbag wouldn't work in a crash. This may also cause the horn or other steering wheel-mounted controls not to work properly. Safety Risk: An airbag that doesn't work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the production date of the spiral cable assembly, and replace it if necessary.

Issue: This recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at Toyota or Lexus dealerships. On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt. Note: This recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers: C014003034 PK5A408J09 PU14000904 C014003151 PK5A408J13 PU14000905 C014000885 PK5A489J11 PU14000907 C014000888 PK5A489J22 PU14000909 C014000907 PK5A410H00 PU14000911 C014100904 PU14000900 PU14000913 C014100907 PU14000901 PU14003571 C014100911 PU14000902 PK5A408J05 PU14000903 Safety Risk: Engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

On certain vehicles, the electrical power cords of some dealer installed block heaters may have been improperly manufactured, causing the wires to contact each other, resulting in a short circuit. A short circuit could lead to a fire which would increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: For vehicles where the subject block heater was approved for installation, the dealer will replace the block heater assembly with a new one of an improved design. For vehicles where the subject block heater was not approved for installation, dealers will remove the block heater assembly. On certain vehicles, the seal between the rear differential and the axle housing could degrade due to contact variation. This could result in leaking differential oil. If the vehicle is operated in this condition, damage to the differential could occur, and could potentially result in noise, reduced motive power and rear axle lockup. These issues could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the rear differential for leaks. If no leaks are found, fastening nuts will be re-tightened. If leaks are found, the differential gasket will be replaced, and new differential fastening nuts installed. Note: This applies to vehicles equipped with automatic transmission and non-locking differentials only.

On certain vehicles, the leaf springs in the rear suspension could fracture due to stress and corrosion. If this were to occur, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components, including the fuel tank. If the broken leaf were to contact the fuel tank repeatedly, it could puncture the fuel tank. This could result in a fuel leak which, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing injury and/or property damage.
