History/Overview
The Sienna is Toyota’s long-running minivan model, introduced in the late 1990s to replace the quirky-but-cool Previa. For 2021, the Sienna is all-new and enters its fourth generation with fresh styling and an all-hybrid lineup, making it the first-ever minivan in North America with conventional (non-plug-in) hybrid power.
Available Trims
Toyota offers the 2021 Sienna in LE, XLE, XSE and Limited trim levels. All use a 2.5L gas engine and at least one electric motor; an AWD option puts a second motor at the rear axle for added traction. A continuously variable transmission connects the engine and main electric motor to the front wheels.
Standard Features
Sienna LE’s exterior wears 17-inch tires on alloy wheels, a front wiper de-icer, rear spoiler, LED head- and taillights, power sliding side doors, and heated side mirrors. Inside, there’s a 4.2-inch driver info display, three-zone A/C, a heated/leather-trimmed steering wheel, heated front seats with eight-way power driver adjustments, and cloth upholstery.
The base Sienna has a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker stereo.
The Sienna’s standard set of driver safety assists consists of forward collision warning with automatic braking; lane departure alert with steering assist; radar cruise control; automatic high beams; lane tracing assist; and blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert.
XLE brings a sunroof, a leather-trimmed shifter, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, four-zone A/C, Softex upholstery, four-way power front passenger seat adjustments, passive keyless entry, hands-free tailgate and side doors, and an eight-speaker stereo.
XSE’s additions are 20-inch wheels, black roof rails, sport grille and front/rear fascia, LED daytime running lights, upgraded headlights, sport Softex seating, navigation, an integrated garage door remote, and the Driver Easy Speak system.
Limited trim gains a lot of kit. Outside, there are 18-inch wheels and tires, LED fog lights, auto-dimming/power-folding side mirrors, and puddle light projectors.
The cabin gets ambient lighting, a 7.0-inch driver info display, electric steering column adjustments, heated second-row seats with Ottomans, ventilated front seats, Softex/leather upholstery, third-row sun shades, a 12-speaker stereo, a 120-volt power outlet, wireless smartphone charging, and a rear-seat entertainment system.
Finally, Limited’s safety additions are a camera-based rearview mirror with washer, parking sensors with rear automatic cross-traffic braking, and bird’s-eye camera views.
Key Options
The Sienna’s sole option is a technology package for XSE trim that adds LED fog lights, parking sensors with rear cross-traffic braking, wireless smartphone charging, a camera-based rearview mirror, rear-seat entertainment system, a 12-speaker stereo, and a 120-volt power outlet.
Fuel Economy
Toyota’s fuel consumption estimates for the Sienna are 6.6/6.5 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
The Sienna’s most direct competitor is the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid; Chrysler also makes a gas-only Pacifica and a lower-priced Grand Caravan. Toyota also faces off against the Honda Odyssey and, this year, the Kia Sedona, which is being replaced in 2022 by a redesigned model called the Carnival.
