History/Overview
The Toyota Sienna minivan was introduced in the late 1990s, but Toyota’s minivan legacy dates back to well before that. Its predecessor was the jelly bean-shaped Previa, a mid-engined vehicle whose mechanical design followed on that of its boxy, cab-forward predecessor.
The current, third-generation Sienna was introduced as a 2011 model.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
New for 2020 is a Nightshade Edition package that adds unique cosmetic exterior details to the SE FWD trim level. Otherwise, the Sienna is carried over unchanged from last year.
Available Trims
Sienna trim levels include the seven-passenger CE, which is followed by LE and SE variants with front-wheel drive and eight-passenger seating.
LE and SE can also be had with AWD and seats for seven, and that configuration carries through to the posh XLE.
All Sienna trims use a 3.5L V6 engine (296 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque) and an eight-speed transmission.
Standard Features
All Sienna models come with three-zone automatic climate control, a four-speaker stereo with 7.0-inch display, Apple CarPlay, cloth seats, six-way driver and four-way front passenger manual seat adjustments, power windows and door locks, conversation mirror, cruise control, keyless entry, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic braking, automatic high beams, radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, 17-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler, roof rails, heated side mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer and automatic headlights.
LE adds a safety connect suite, six-speaker stereo with 8.0-inch display and satellite radio, upgraded seat fabric, heated front seats, an eight-way power seat with lumbar, auto-dimming rearview mirror, garage door opener, power-sliding side doors, colour-keyed grille and chrome grille surround.
LE AWD seven-passenger trim gets middle-row captain’s seats, lighted front cupholders, 18-inch wheels with run-flat tires.
SE FWD eight-passenger models gain a leather-trimmed steering wheel, leather seating, four-way front passenger seat with folding armrest, acoustic windshield glass, 4.2-inch TFT information display, sport gauges, chrome interior door handles, power tailgate, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, 19-inch wheels, sport fascia and grille, fog lights and LED daytime running lights and taillights.
SE AWD seven-passenger trim gets embedded traffic and weather information, navigation, rear-seat entertainment system, 10-speaker stereo, push-button start and sunroof.
XLE AWD seven-passenger trim adds power rear side windows, woodgrain trim, rear parking sonar, passive keyless entry and a silver grille.
Key Options
SE FWD’s Nightshade Package adds chrome door handles and window trim and black side mirrors, badges and taillight surrounds. A Technology Package adds an 8.0-inch display screen, a 10-speaker stereo, navigation, rear-seat entertainment system, sunroof and push-button start.
XLE’s Limited Package includes the features from the SE Tech pack, and adds a bird’s eye monitor, HID headlights, automatic high beams, puddle lamps, auto-dimming and power-folding side mirrors, heated steering wheel, premium leather seating, driver’s seat memory and rain-sensing wipers.
Fuel Economy
Toyota’s fuel consumption estimates for the Sienna are 12.6/9.1 L/100 km (city/highway) with front-wheel drive, and 13.4/9.6 with AWD.
Competition
Sienna competitors include the Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona, Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Grand Caravan. Toyota is the only one in its class to offer AWD; the Chrysler Pacifica’s standout feature is an optional plug-in hybrid powertrain.
