Redesigned in 2008, the Toyota Sequoia is largely unchanged for 2009, but with a new model added: the 5.7-litre V8 that was previously available only in the Limited and Platinum models is now also used in a new SR5 model. The SR5 is also available with the 4.7-litre V8 as before.
Engine choices are the 4.7-litre V8 with five-speed automatic in the SR5 4.7, and 5.7-litre V8 with six-speed automatic in the SR5 5.7, Limited and Platinum models. With its extra gear and variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust, the 5.7-litre provides more power than the 4.7-litre, but with a better combined fuel economy rating. All models use a part-time four-wheel drive system and feature three rows of seats.
Features on the SR5 4.7 include 18-inch alloy wheels, three-zone automatic climate control, six-CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input, ten-way driver and four-way passenger power heated leather seats, 40/20/40 middle seats, power-flat-folding 60/40 third-row seats, power locks with keyless entry, conversation mirror, power windows with front auto up/down, power tailgate window, tilt and telescopic wheel, front and rear parking assist, cruise control, heated mirrors, rear privacy glass, running boards, roof rack, power sunroof, trailer harness with electronic brake control connector, variable intermittent wipers, rear wiper, windshield de-icer, headlamp washers, fog lamps and front tow hook.
The SR5 5.7 adds 20-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped wheel with audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, and integrated garage door opener.
The Limited adds wheel-mounted HVAC controls, Optitron electronic gauges, illuminated vanity mirrors, power liftgate, auto-dimming sideview mirrors, rear glass sunshade, power-folding mirrors with auto tilt, chrome mirrors and rear spoiler.
The Platinum adds six-CD/MP3 stereo, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, navigation system with backup camera, perforated leather seats with heat and ventilation, middle-row heated captain's seats, power tilt and telescopic wheel, second-row console box, dynamic laser cruise control, 115-volt power outlet, and driver's side memory.
Surprisingly nimble and with a tight turning radius for its size, the Sequoia is built on the new Tundra. It shares its dash, with big, easy-to-use dials that are widely spaced and may prove difficult for some smaller drivers to reach. The new SR5 model gives buyers a chance to get into a lower-priced model with an engine that can provide even better fuel mileage than the next step down.
