History/Overview
The GR Supra is Toyota’s performance flagship, a stylish coupe the company developed with BMW (whose Z4 is based on the same platform and mechanicals). Launched last year, the GR Supra revived a name previously used on a production model in 2002.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2021, Toyota adds a 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged engine as the new base powerplant, and the 3.0L turbo six-cylinder the car launched with last year gains 47 hp. The sole transmission is an eight-speed automatic. All Supra models are rear-drivers.
Available Trims
Toyota names the Supra’s trims after its engines, so the base model is called 2.0, and the uplevel version is the 3.0.
Standard Features
The Supra 2.0 comes with an electric parking brake, Brembo brakes, passive keyless entry, a four-speaker stereo with an 8.8-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth, a USB input, heated seats, Alcantara upholstery, manual seat adjustments, tilt-and-telescopic steering, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel.
Other niceties are dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a cargo area mat, a digital gauge cluster, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, an auto-dimming driver’s side mirror, 18-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, and all-LED exterior lighting.
Standard safety kit includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, radar cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, forward collision detection with automatic braking, automatic high beams, and road sign assist.
Supra 3.0 trim adds red four-piston brake calipers, adaptive variable suspension, an active exhaust, sport differential, wireless smartphone charging, satellite radio, navigation, Apple CarPlay, a 12-speaker stereo, power-adjustable seats with power side bolsters, an integrated garage door opener, sport pedals, a head-up display, power-folding side mirrors, and 19-inch wheels and tires.
Key Options
The GR Supra’s only option is an A91 Edition package for the 3.0 model, which adds a rear lip spoiler, carbon fibre mirror caps, Alcantara seats, and special 19-inch wheels.
Fuel Economy
Toyota’s fuel consumption estimates for the GR Supra are 9.4/7.3 L/100 km (city/highway) for the 2.0 model and 10.6/8.0 L/100 km in 3.0 spec.
Competition
Toyota’s competition for the GR Supra includes the Nissan 370Z, Chevrolet’s Corvette, Porsche’s Cayman, and the Mazda MX-5 RF. If you want this car with a convertible top, you can pay more for the Z4.
