History/Overview
For 2022, the current generation of Toyota Camry enters its fifth model year. This is the sportiest Camry ever, thanks to a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) option added in 2020.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
The 2022 Camry Hybrid adds an optional Nightshade Edition package. Also, gas-powered Camry SE and SE AWD trims gain a heated steering wheel.
Available Trims
Toyota offers the gas-powered Camry in base, LE, SE, XSE, and XSE V6 trims, along with SE AWD and XSE AWD. Camry Hybrid is available in LE, SE, XSE, and XLE trims.
Gas models start with a 2.5L four-cylinder engine, and V6 cars get a 3.5L motor; all gas Camrys use an eight-speed transmission. Camry Hybrid matches the 2.5L with an electric motor and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Standard Features
Camry’s base trim comes equipped with radar cruise control, forward collision detection/avoidance, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, tire pressure monitoring, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a six-speaker stereo, 7.0-inch touchscreen controls, A/C, a 4.2-inch driver info display, 16-inch steel wheels with covers, LED headlights/taillights, and heated/power-adjustable side mirrors.
LE trim adds heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and 17-inch alloy wheels. An LE Upgrade pack brings passive keyless entry, an auto-dimming mirror, blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, dual-zone auto A/C, a 9.0-inch touchscreen, integrated garage remote, remote engine start, and wireless smartphone charging.
SE trim gets unique exterior styling, heated sport cloth/leatherette seats, and a heated/leather-trimmed steering wheel. SE AWD adds a 7.0-inch driver info screen, and an electric parking brake. SE Upgrade brings a 9.0-inch infotainment display, 18-inch wheels, and a sunroof.
Camry’s Nightshade Edition is a cosmetic pack with blacked-out wheels and various black exterior trim pieces.
XSE models build on SE Upgrade with 19-inch wheels, panoramic sunroof, leather seating, a power front passenger seat, ambient lighting, and all-speed radar cruise.
XSE V6 gets a 10-speaker stereo, head-up driver display, bird’s eye view parking monitor, front parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic braking.
Camry TRD is the performance-oriented choice, building on XSE V6 with trim-specific 19-inch wheels, a sport exhaust, body kit/spoiler, red seat stitching, sport-tuned suspension, and SoftTex upholstery.
Toyota Camry Hybrid offerings begin with LE trim, featuring 17-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, dual-zone auto A/C, heated front seats, power driver’s seat, passive keyless, and all-speed radar cruise.
Camry Hybrid XLE gains 18-inch wheels, sunroof, upgraded headlights/taillights, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, power front passenger seat, leather upholstery, auto-dimming mirror, ambient lighting, 9.0-inch infotainment display, wireless charging, head-up display, 7.0-inch driver info screen, forward parking sensors, rear cross-traffic braking, bird’s-eye view cameras, and blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
Camry Hybrid SE builds on LE with 18-inch wheels, sport suspension and body kit, sunroof, heated steering wheel, auto-dimming mirror, wireless charging, and blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. SE Upgrade brings 19-inch wheels, leather, power front passenger seat, 7.0-inch driver info display, and upgraded headlights and taillights.
Camry Hybrid Nightshade builds on SE trim with black wheels and other black exterior styling cues.
Fuel Economy
Toyota’s fuel consumption estimates for the Camry start at 4.9/4.8 L/100 km (city/highway) for Hybrid LE, and 5.3/5.0 L/100 km for all other hybrid models.
Four-cylinder cars are rated as low as 8.5/6.1 L/100 km (city/highway), and an AWD model comes as thrifty as 9.3/6.8 L/100 km.
V6 cars start at 10.5/7.1 L/100 km (city/highway), and TRD trim is rated for 10.8/7.6 L/100 km.
Competition
The Toyota Camry competes against the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5, and Subaru Legacy.
