For 2007, the Toyota 4Runner receives only a few changes, mostly to the SR5 V8 model, which is now called the SR5 V8 Sport and receives 17-inch wheels instead of 16-inch, six-CD changer, power sunroof and other extra trim items.
Based on the Prado, a Land Cruiser model unavailable in North America, the 4Runner is a body-on-frame truck that comes with part-time four-wheel drive on V6 models, and full-time 4WD with locking centre differential and two-speed transfer case on V8 models. All models have anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, traction control, downhill assist control, hill-start assist control and engine, fuel tank and transfer case protector plates.
Engine choices are a 4.0-litre V6 or a 4.7-litre V8 based on the powerplant used in the full-size Sequoia SUV; both are mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with cooler.
The SR5 V6 includes 16-inch alloy wheels, CD/MP3 player with six speakers and auxiliary jack, automatic climate control, 60/40 folding rear seat, power windows and locks with keyless entry, power rear hatch window, four-spoke tilt wheel, cargo cover, cruise control, towing hitch with 7-pin harness, power mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, LED taillamps and tire pressure monitoring system.
The SR5 V8 adds 17-inch alloy wheels, six-CD/MP3/WMA stereo with wheel-mounted controls, hood scoop, eight-way driver and four-way passenger power seat adjust, dual vanity mirrors, heated mirrors, leather-wrapped tilt/telescopic wheel, double-decker cargo floor, garage door opener, anti-theft system and automatic headlamps.
The SR5 V8 line’s extra features can also be added to the SR5 V6 as part of a Sport Edition Package.
The Limited V6 and Limited V8 models include the SR5 V8 features, and add side and curtain airbags, 18-inch alloy wheels, premium JBL stereo with ten speakers, dual-zone climate control, heated leather seats with driver side memory, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, 115-volt power outlet, key lockout protection, rear bumper protector, black roof rack, illuminated running boards, rear spoiler, rear step bumper and splash guards.
Although it’s a body-on-frame truck, the 4Runner offers lively handling, and its suspension does a good job on road imperfections, for a smooth ride that soaks up bumps. It’s also seriously off-road capable should you want to get into a road surface that’s even worse; drawing on the Land Cruiser’s ability, this is a good choice for all-around needs.
