History/Overview
The Model 3 is Tesla's newest addition in Canada, a compact sedan that becomes the high-profile brand's least-expensive offering for the 2019 model year.
Available Trims
Model 3 trims are based on driving range. A Standard Range model is limited to 151 km, a number that jumps to 386 km in the Standard Range Plus version. A Mid Range trim goes 425 km and the Long Range trim promises 499 km.
Standard Features
Standard Range models come with rear-wheel drive, cloth upholstery, navigation, parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, glass roof, heated, auto-dimming and and power-folding side mirrors, and satellite radio. Power output is 258 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque.
Standard Range Plus adds a Partial Premium interior that boasts heated 12-way power front seats, premium seat upholstery, navigation, a centre console with storage, four USB ports and docking stations for two smartphones.
Mid Range and Long Range trims add a Premium interior with heated rear seats, 14-speaker stereo, satellite view maps, in-car music and media streaming, Internet browser and LED fog lights.
Key Options
Tesla offers the Model 3 with AWD, and cars so equipped can also be had with a Performance Package.
A self-driving option adds autonomous highway driving, automated parking and a summon function that will bring the car to you in a parking lot.
Fuel Economy
Tesla estimates the Model 3's energy consumption at 1.7/1.9 Le/100 km (city/highway) for Standard, Standard Plus and Long Range models. The Mid Range trim is rated for 1.8/2.0 Le/100 km, and the AWD and Performance versions' estimates are 2.0/2.1 Le/100 km.
Competition
If you're more concerned with driving range than sporty driving feel, the Model 3 Standard Range Plus lines up against cars like the Kia Niro EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf.
If it is sport sedan performance you want, look to upscale plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) like the BMW 530e sedan and i8 sports car and the Volvo S90 T8.
