I liked this car because I could cart alot of stuff around without owning a truck. The engine light was always on despite taking it in no less than 5 times in regards to this...it didnt make me feel safe when out on the highway due to this.
Issue:
On certain vehicles, the occupant classification system (OCS) may not work properly. This could cause the airbag system not to turn off the airbag when an infant or child is seated in the front passenger seat. This could also cause the passenger seat belt reminder to activate when the seat is empty. Note: This problem only affects vehicles with leather seats.
Safety Risk:
In a crash, an airbag that deploys in front of an infant or child increases the risk of injury.
Corrective Actions:
The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a Suzuki service provider to have the front passenger seat cushion replaced.
On certain vehicles, the tension adjuster pulley for the drive belt which operates the power steering pump and air conditioner compressor (if equipped) has an outer portion that is made of plastic. Repeated heat stress can cause the plastic material to deteriorate and pieces of the pulley can break off. Broken pieces of the pulley can get caught between the pulley and the drive belt, causing the drive belt to come off and resulting in the driver needing increased effort to steer the vehicle. This situation could result in a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the power steering pump drive belt tension adjuster pulley. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2010-197.
On certain vehicles, the gear shift rear shaft could break due to repeated right to left and left to right movement of the shifter lever. If this occurs, the driver would not be able to switch gear which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the gear shift rear shaft with an improved part.
On certain vehicles, the Occupant Classification System may malfunction, causing the airbag warning lamp to illuminate, and could fail to disable the passenger airbag if a child were seated in the front passenger seating position. This could result in an unwarranted airbag deployment in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to a child seated in the front passenger seat. Note: In this situation, the "PASS AIR BAG OFF" light would fail to illuminate, regardless of if a child or adult is seated in the front passenger seat. Correction: Vehicles will receive special extended warranty coverage of 10 years or 200,000 kilometers (whichever comes first) from the date the vehicle was originally placed into service. Under this special coverage program, vehicles which experience this condition will have the occupant detection mat replaced.
On certain vehicles, the tension adjuster pulley for the drive belt, which operates the alternator, water pump, air conditioner compressor and power steering pump, may contain an improperly manufactured internal spring that can break due to repeated stress. Should the spring break, this would cause the drive belt tension to be maladjusted, allowing the belt to slip. If the belt comes off, the loss of steering power assist would require the driver to exert increased effort to steer the vehicle. This could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Additionally, the loss of water pump function would cause the coolant temperature to rise, which can lead to engine overheating, while the loss of alternator charging ability would lead to battery discharge and eventual engine stall. Correction: Dealers will replace the drive belt tension adjuster pulley.

On certain vehicles, the ignition/park shift interlock system may become inoperable. This can allow the shifter to be moved out of the PARK position with the ignition key removed. This could allow the vehicle to roll away, possibly causing property damage and/or personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the shift lock module on the shift lever assembly.
On certain vehicles, the rear differential left bearing retainer may be cracked due to a manufacturing defect. A cracked retainer can allow oil leakage from the rear differential. With continued use, this can lead to the rear differential gears becoming locked and the vehicle disabled. Correction: Dealers will replace the left-side rear differential retainer.
On certain vehicles, under ambient temperatures below -25 degrees Celsius, moisture can freeze in the fuel pressure regulator. As a result, fuel system pressure may increase at the time of engine start up, causing fuel loss at the fuel pipe/fuel hose connection. Fuel loss in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire. Correction: For 1999-2000 model year vehicles, dealers will (1) replace the fuel pressure regulator & vacuum hose and change the system routing to accommodate use of a higher surge tank attachment location that will prevent water from being sucked into the fuel pressure regulator, and (2) replace the fuel delivery hose and replace the hose clamp with an improved clamp. For 2001 and later model year vehicles, dealers will only replace the fuel pressure regulator & vacuum hose and change the system routing as described above. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2001032.
On certain vehicles, the accelerator cable casing cap that is attached to the firewall can crack due to extended exposure to forces from the accelerator cable and insufficient long-term durability of the plastic casing cap. If the casing cap becomes cracked, movement of the inner accelerator cable through the cap can cause the inner accelerator cable to become frayed. If the inner accelerator cable becomes frayed, it can stick during vehicle operation. Correction: Dealer will replace the accelerator cable assembly.
On certain vehicles, the windshield may not be properly secured to the vehicle body due to insufficient adhesion between paint applied during the second-stage painting process and paint applied during final-stage painting. If the windshield is not properly secured to the vehicle body, it may separate from the vehicle during a collision resulting in ejection of unbelted occupants and severe injury or death. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.
Certain vehicles do not comply with the requirements of CMVSS 120 - Tire Selection and Rims for Vehicles other than Passenger Cars. The presentation of some of the information on the tire information label deviates from the format set forth in the standard and the label may not be permanently affixed as required. Correction: Tire information label will be replaced on affected vehicles.
On certain vehicles, when ambient temperature is below -25 Celsius, fuel pressure may increase at the time of engine start up, resulting in fuel loss at the fuel pipe/fuel hose connection. Fuel loss in the presence of an ignition source, could ignite and result in a vehicle fire. Correction: The Intake Manifold Vacuum Union and Fuel Pressure Regulator will be replaced on all affected vehicles. Note: superceded by recall 04-313.
Certain vehicles do not comply with Regulation 6 - Statement of Compliance. The abbreviation "GAWR" on the Compliance Label was recorded in error as "GVWR". Correction: No action will be taken since this poses no risk to motor vehicle safety. The front and rear axle ratings adjacent to these abbreviations are correct and conspicuous.
