When Subaru redesigned the Impreza compact for 2012, the first question on every enthusiast's lips was, “When do we get a new WRX?”
The answer is now, as a 2015 model. As before, the WRX (and the even higher-performance STI, covered in a separate entry) is based on the Impreza, but is a much different car aimed at a much different buyer. The hatchback is no more; all you can get, now, is a sedan.
WRX is powered by a turbocharged, 2.0L four-cylinder engine arranged in Subaru's favoured horizontally-opposed (boxer) layout. Power output is 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, routed through a six-speed manual transmission, or an optional continuously variable (CVT) automatic. Naturally, all WRXs are all-wheel drive, with an viscous-coupling limited-slip centre differential.
Trim levels include the base WRX, mid-range Sport Package, and range-topping Sport-Tech Package.
Standard kit includes seven airbags (including driver's knee blocker), whiplash-reducing front seats with height-and-tilt adjustable headrests, 17-inch alloy wheels, quad-tip performance exhaust, windshield wiper de-icer, automatic climate control, cruise control, heated front seats, six-way manually-adjustable driver's seat, four-way manual front passenger seat, 4.3-inch colour multifunction display, six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth with streaming audio function, USB input, and flat-bottomed leather-trimmed steering wheel with integrated audio, Bluetooth and cruise controls.
The Sport Package adds a low-profile rear spoiler, LED low-beam headlights, foglights, sunroof and eight-way power driver's seat.
Move up to the Sport-tech Package and Subaru adds intelligent keyless entry with pushbutton start, navigation, satellite radio, 440-watt, nine-speaker stereo, and leather seats.
