Changes to the WRX and WRX STI are in trim for 2014. The most notable update is the addition of the Tsurugi (a Japanese word for a traditional broadsword) Edition of the WRX STI: it's mostly an appearance package that adds a couple of functional features, too.
Both cars use a 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine, tuned to 265 hp and 244 lb-ft of torque in the WRX, and 305 hp and 290 lb-ft in the STI. The WRX gets a five-speed manual transmission, and the STI upgrades to a six-speed. There is no automatic option.
The WRX starts with an open-type rear differential, all-wheel drive, performance-tuned suspension, stability and traction control, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, six airbags, integrated front-seat head restraints, engine immobilizer and anti-theft system, 17-inch alloy wheels with summer tires, aerodynamic body-colour ground effects, rear underbody diffuser, quad-tip exhaust, foldable, power-adjustable and heated side mirrors, black stainless steel and mesh grille, windshield wiper de-icer, six-speaker stereo, MediaHub iPod USB integration, automatic climate control, tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel with integrated cruise and audi controls, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, alloy sport pedals, heated rally sport-type seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seats and black cloth upholstery with red stitching.
Sedan models get a low-profile rear spoiler with integrated brake light and rear-seat folding centre armrest; hatchbacks get a large rear roofline spoiler with brake light and a retractable cargo area cover.
A Limited option package brings fog lights, sunroof, satellite radio and leather seats.
The STI adds a number of performance upgrades beyond its stronger engine. These include a helical limited-slip front different, Torsen limited slip rear differential, multi-mode driver-controlled centre differential, multi-mode stability and traction control systems, Brembo high-performance brakes, sport anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, six airbags, integrated front-seat head restraints, engine immobilizer and anti-theft system, 18-inch wheels with summer performance tires, headlight surround with aluminum finish, and black alcantara and anthracite black leather bolsters with red stitching.
The STI Sport-tech package adds unique 18-inch wheels, sunroof, Xenon headlights, automatic climate control, multimedia Pioneer stereo with navigation with smartphone integration and detachable face, side mirror-mounted LED turn signal repeaters, fog lights and satellite radio integration.
Tsurugi Edition cars get unique 18-inch wheels, front lip spoiler, 10-inch subwoofer, satellite radio, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather seats, automatic climate control, fog lights, sunroof, Xenon headlights and side mirror-mounted LED turn signal repeaters.
