History/Overview
As the brand’s family sedan model, the Subaru Legacy was the first car to bring standard AWD to the mid-size class. Despite that head start, the Legacy has suffered the same loss of popularity as most of its competitors as buyers flock to crossovers and SUVs. Not helping Subaru is the fact AWD has become common in the mid-size sedan category, with several Legacy competitors offering it either standard or as an option. This seventh-generation Legacy was introduced in 2020.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
This year, the Legacy gets refreshed styling, an updated version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist system, and a revised infotainment system.
Available Trims
Subaru offers the Legacy in Touring, Limited, and GT trim levels. The first two use a 2.5L four-cylinder engine, continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), and – of course – AWD.

Touring models come with auto-dimming side mirrors, LED fog lights, auto on/off LED headlights, a sunroof, LED taillights, 17-inch alloy wheels, front wiper de-icer, passive keyless entry. Inside, there’s a 11.6-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio, wireless phone charging, dual-zone A/C, an auto-dimming interior mirror, a power driver’s seat, and heated front seats/steering wheel.
Legacy comes standard with the EyeSight safety suite, which comprises driver distraction mitigation, reverse automatic braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency steering, lane centering assist, lane keep assist, forward collision mitigation, lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Limited adds 18-inch wheels, 12-speaker audio, a power passenger seat, leather upholstery, and heated rear seats.

Fuel Economy
Subaru’s fuel consumption estimates are 8.7/6.7 L/100 km (city/highway) for the 2.5L engine, and 10.1/7.5 L/100 km for 2.4L turbo models.
Competition
The Legacy’s closest competitors are the Nissan Altima and Kia K5 with their standard AWD; next up is the Toyota Camry, which can be optioned with AWD; finally, the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, and Chevrolet Malibu are front-drivers.
