History/Overview
Subaru launched the seventh generation of its Legacy mid-sized sedan in 2020 with new styling and powertrains. As it has done for many years, the Legacy shares its underpinnings with the Outback crossover, which is effectively a station wagon with a lifted suspension; the Outback is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, Legacy’s Limited trim adds the DriverFocus anti-distraction system, and the rest of the lineup carries over unchanged.
Available Trims
Subaru offers the Legacy in Convenience, Touring, Limited, Limited GT and Premier GT trims. GT models use a 2.4L turbo four-cylinder engine, while the rest of the range runs a 2.5L non-turbo motor. A continuously variable transmission is included in all trims, as is AWD.
Standard Features
Convenience trim has heated side mirrors, steering responsive LED headlights, 17-inch steel wheels, dual 7.0-inch touchscreens, four-speaker audio, automatic A/C, power driver’s seat, and heated front seats. Also included is the EyeSight safety suite of adaptive cruise control, lane centering assist, lane keep assist, and forward collision mitigation.
Touring adds auto-dimming mirrors, fog lights, alloy wheels, front wiper de-icer, passive keyless entry, a single 11.6-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker stereo, dual-zone A/C, heated steering wheel, reverse automatic braking, blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist.
Limited gains 18-inch wheels, 12-speaker audio, a compass, power front passenger seat, driver’s bottom cushion adjustment, leather upholstery, and driver distraction mitigation.
Limited GT adds the turbocharged engine and alloy pedals.
Premier GT gets power-folding mirrors, a CD player, Nappa leather, and ventilated seats.
Fuel Economy
The Subaru Legacy’s fuel consumption estimates are 8.8/6.7 L/100 km (city/highway) with the 2.5L engine, and 8.8/7.3 L/100 km for turbocharged GT models.
Competition
Subaru Legacy fights for its slice of family sedan pie with the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5, and Chevrolet Malibu.
