History/Overview
The Legacy has served as Subaru's mid-size, family sedan since the end of the 1980s. This year sees the Legacy enter its seventh generation with a new design and engines. It is also the basis for the brand's Outback crossover, which is covered in a separate buyer's guide entry.
Available Trims
The 2020 Subaru Legacy comes in Convenience, Touring, Limited and Premier trim levels. Engine choices include a redesigned 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder and a new 2.4L turbocharged engine that is optional in GT versions of the Limited and Premier models. Both engines are standard with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and, of course, Subaru's well-done all-wheel drive technology.
Standard Features
Convenience trim comes with automatic climate control, heated front seats, 10-way power driver's seat, dual 7.0-inch infotainment displays, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power windows and door locks, dual rear USB ports, automatic on/off LED headlights and an electric parking brake. This entry-level Legacy also includes Subaru's EyeSight active safety suite, which boasts a new-for-2020 lane centering assist function.
Touring trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights, auto-dimming side- and rearview mirrors, sunroof, passive keyless entry, leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift lever, dual-zone climate control, Subaru's Starlink connected services, blind spot monitor, reverse automatic braking, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and a vertically oriented 11.6-inch infotainment screen.
The Legacy's Limited package brings navigation, a 12-speaker sound system, leather seating, heated steering wheel, driver's seat memory with adjustable bottom cushion length, eight-way power driver's seat adjustments, heated rear seats, steering-responsive headlights and 18-inch wheels.
Finally, Premier trim gets Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a CD player, front-view camera, power-folding side mirrors and a driver distraction mitigation system.
Limited GT and Premier GT get the turbocharged engine, along with dual chrome exhaust finishers and GT badging.
Fuel Economy
As of this writing, Subaru has not published fuel consumption figures for the 2020 Legacy's new engines.
Competition
Given that the Legacy is standard with AWD, its only true sedan competitor is the Nissan Altima, which added standard AWD in 2019. However, the Legacy does compete for buyers with nameplates like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima.
