History/Overview
The Subaru Impreza may not be Canada’s most popular model in the compact car class, but it’s nonetheless a favourite for its excellent standard AWD system, which makes it an effective winter warrior. The current Impreza was introduced in 2017 and updated in 2020.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2023, Subaru has dropped the Impreza sedan, leaving the hatchback as the only way to get the brand’s most-affordable vehicle.
Available Trims
Subaru offers the Impreza in Convenience, Touring, Sport, and Sport-tech trim levels. In all, power is from a 2.0L four-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and options to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Standard Features
Convenience trim’s equipment highlights are fog lights, auto on/off headlights, 16-inch steel wheels with covers, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, four-speaker audio, and manual A/C.
Touring adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a wiper de-icer, a six-speaker stereo, automatic A/C, a 6.3-inch info display, passive keyless entry, and heated front seats/steering wheel.
Sport brings LED headlights, a sunroof, 17-inch wheels, adaptive headlights, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist. When optioned with the CVT, Sport also gets rear automatic braking.
Sport-tech gains automatic high beams, 18-inch wheels, navigation, eight-speaker audio, dual-zone A/C, and leather upholstery. Sport-tech also comes standard with the EyeSight safety assist suite of adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and forward collision mitigation.
Key Options
In Convenience, Touring, and Sport trims, EyeSight is bundled with the optional CVT.
Fuel Economy
Subaru’s fuel consumption estimates are 10.1/7.7 L/100 km (city/highway) with the manual transmission, and 8.4/6.6 L/100 km with the automatic CVT.
Competition
If you’re looking for direct competition, shop the Impreza against the Mazda3 Sport with that car’s optional AWD setup. Toyota now also offers the Corolla Hybrid with eAWD. Other competitors are the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, and Kia Forte.
