For 2016, the compact Subaru Impreza in both sedan and hatchback form carries forward from 2015 with no significant changes. However, it continues to be the only vehicle in its class with standard all-wheel-drive, and a fine system it is. Equipped with winter tires, these cars are all but unstoppable in the winter.
The Impreza is a roomy car with generous back seat quarters, and it displays a nicely compliant ride along with sharp, confidence inspiring handling. The steering is accurate, seats are well contoured and ergonomics are good, although cabin quality is down on some of its competition and audio sound is poor.
It’s also a fairly weak performer with its 148 hp, 145 lb-ft 2.0L boxer four-cylinder. Additionally, the optional CVT has the engine droning when accelerating. That said, if you’re not in a great hurry, the solid and tractable Impreza is a worthy ally for all road conditions. The Impreza also gets excellent crash scores.
Unusual in this class of vehicle is the available EyeSight that includes rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking and lane departure warning.
Pricing starts at $19,995 for the base 2.0i four-door sedan with five-speed manual transmission. Standard features include back-up camera and 15-inch steel wheels. (Add $900 to any of these prices for the more practical hatchback body style, and $1300 for the CVT).
The Touring Package at $21,695 will be the default entry point for most buyers as it adds heated front seats, 16-inch alloys, 6-speaker audio and auto headlights. Sport Package ($23,895) upgrades the wheels to 17 inches and includes sunroof, side skirts, halogen fog lights, alloy pedals and auto climate control.
The top-trim Limited at $26,995 loads it up with leather, a 7-inch infotainment system with navigation, dual zone climate control, HID headlights, and more. A proximity key with push-button start comes with the $2500 Technology Package, that also includes EyeSight and steering responsive fog lights. The latter is available on Sport and Limited trim vehicles.
