The BRZ presents itself as one of the purest driving sports cars experiences at any price. Although modestly powered (200 hp and 152 lb-ft from a somewhat gruff 2.0L boxer 4-cyl), the driving position, slick shifter and innate balance of this car make it a joy. The BRZ will happily drift when prodded, and it has usable back seat too.
The base car, starting at $28,395, gets a 6.1-inch touchscreen interface with navigation, SMS text messaging capability, iPod USB, SiriusXM, 8-speaker audio and black cloth with red stitching. The $29,395 Sport-Tech adds heated Alcantara/leather seats, proximity key with pushbutton start, dual zone climate control and a small rear spoiler.
Available on the base and Sport-Tech is a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters ($1200). Fuel consumption ratings are 10.9/7.9 L/100 km (city/highway) for six-speed manual and 9.6/7.0 for the six-speed automatic. Premium fuel is recommended.
Subaru’s front-engine rear-drive sports coupe gets a new trim level for 2016 dubbed the Hikari Edition at $30,495. Built on the six–speed manual Sport-Tech model, we’ll only see 100 of these Hyper Blue limited edition cars in Canada. Just don’t expect any performance upgrades. Other than an upper strut tower brace, everything else about the Hikari is cosmetic - black exterior trim, blue footwell illumination, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, and blue interior trim.
