NEW FOR 2016:
- No major changes.
It will be at least another year before North America receives the third-generation electric ForTwo electric drive (ED). For the moment, Smart is focused on launching the standard gas model, so customers looking for an all-electric version will need to make do with the current car.
The ED is offered in Coupe and Cabriolet body styles; the drop-top version offers an integrated electric cloth roof with removable side rails. It’s presently the only electric convertible on the market. Both are powered by a 55-kW electric motor good for 74 hp and 96 lb-ft of torque. It takes about 16 hours to charge its 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack from empty via a 110-volt household outlet; using a 240-volt charger drops that to six. The official range is 109 km.
Both Coupe and Cabriolet ED come in a single trim. Standard equipment includes LED daytime running lights, charging cable, keyless entry, power door locks, two-speaker AM/FM stereo with aux and USB inputs, manual climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 15-inch alloy wheels, heated seats, and power heated side mirrors. The Coupe receives a fixed panoramic glass roof, while the Cabriolet has the aforementioned power cloth top that can be raised and lowered via a four-button comfort key.
There are three additional packages on offer for Fortwo ED buyers. The Design package adds white-painted wheels, Crystal white body panels, black fabric with green cabin accents, and a green-painted Tridion safety cell. The Leather package adds black leather seats with leather-look dash panel. The Touring package adds cruise control, and a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Other options include tire-pressure monitor, alarm system, centre storage console, Surround sound speaker system, and interior ambient lighting.
