Scion’s quintessential box on wheels carries over into 2014 unchanged, other than a standard Pioneer touchscreen display audio system and the availability of the Release Series 10.0 of which only 50 will be imported into Canada. This is not to be confused with last year’s xB 10 Series, which celebrated the brand’s 10th anniversary.
The xB rides on the underpinnings of the Corolla and Matrix, but comes powered by the 2.4-litre four-cylinder from the Camry. The xB is front-wheel drive, and can be had with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. While not especially exciting to drive, the xB offers buyers plenty of interior space, legendary Toyota reliability, plus a cavernous cargo bay which can be stocked up with speakers, subwoofers and aftermarket TFT displays.
As with all Scion models, the xB comes in “monospec”, meaning that other than colour and transmission choice, all equipment is standard. Included are 16-inch steel wheels, LED daytime running lights, air conditioning, cloth sport bucket seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, cruise control, digital clock, vanity mirrors, outside temperature gauge, power locks with keyless entry, power windows with driver’s auto-down, 12-volt power outlet, tilt and telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, chrome exhaust tip, projector-style headlamps, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, variable intermittent wipers, rear washer/wiper, Pioneer display audio CD/MP3 stereo with six speakers, auxiliary input, USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, active front head restraints, and tire pressure monitoring system.
The Release Series 10.0 adds standard Electric Quartz (white with green pearl finish), automatic transmission, piano black interior trim, contrast interior stitching, wireless charging, reverse camera, interior logo projectors, illuminated door sills, custom floor mats, tungsten gray wheel covers, and illuminated cupholders.
Available factory- or dealer-installed accessories include 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, hood deflector, rear spoiler, all-season floor mats, cargo liner, mat, cover and net, heated leather seats, Alpine premium audio, navigation, XM satellite radio, block heater, and security system.
