NEW FOR 2016:
- Standard reverse camera
- New door grips, revised centre console
- New colours: Ablaze, Oceanic
- Release Series 2.0 special edition
Here’s something to ponder: with the demise of the iQ and xB for 2016, there are officially more Scion coupes in its product range than other vehicles. It's a good thing that one of its coupes, the FR-S, is a driving enthusiast's dream. With a perfectly balanced chassis, fun demeanor, and a starting price tag of less than $30,000, the FR-S remains a shining star in the world of affordable sports cars.
For 2016, the FR-S get a standard reverse camera, while the interior has been slightly tweaked with new door grips and a revised centre stack. Two new colours also join the portfolio: Ablaze and Oceanic.
The Release Series limited edition also makes a return, with Version 2.0 (pictured) opting for a low-key luxury oriented look. Gone is the Yuzu yellow paint in favour of a grey-brown shade dubbed Lunar Storm. Dark-finish multi-spoke forged 17-inch TRD wheels, HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights, and a unique aero kit with front and rear spoilers complete the look. Inside are heated Alcantara and leather-upholstered seats with camel-coloured interior, plus camel-coloured two-tone steering wheel, door panels, contrast stitching, and armrest for contrast. As with last year’s model, dual-zone climate control and a proximity key with push-button start are also included. A total of 150 FR-S Release Series 2.0s will be imported into Canada.
The Scion FR-S is powered by a 2.0-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine featuring both port and direct fuel injection; it develops 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. It’s available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic with paddles and automatic rev-matching for downshifts.
FR-S features include 17-inch alloy wheels, limited-slip rear differential, dual exhaust, AM/FM eight-speaker 6.1-inch display audio system, USB port, Bluetooth, aux-in jack, reverse camera, air conditioning, power locks, keyless entry, power windows, cruise control, tilt and telescoping steering column, trip computer, six-way manually adjustable driver's seat, four-way manually adjustable passenger's seat, passenger-side walk-in assist, illuminated vanity mirrors, red contrast stitching, split folding rear seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, solar tinted glass, aluminum pedals, 12-volt power outlet, power adjustable heated mirrors, and tire pressure monitoring.
The Release Series 2.0 adds front and rear lip spoiler, dark-finish 17-inch forged TRD alloy wheels, HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights, camel and black leather-wrapped steering wheel, camel leather door trim, camel coloured contrast stitching dual-zone climate control, and proximity key with push-button start. It is available exclusively in Lunar Storm.
