A fruit of Chrysler's relationship with Fiat, the ProMaster is a rebadged version of a van produced through a joint venture between Fiat and PSA Peugeot Citroen. It's not pretty, but that's also not the point: the ProMaster ostensibly replaces the Sprinter in Chrysler's lineup following the company's breakaway from Mercedes-Benz.
No surprise, then, that, on paper, it bears a strong resemblance to the Sprinter, with a high roof and relatively narrow track. Engine choices include Chrysler's own 3.6L Pentastar V6, making 280 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, and a Fiat four-cylinder turbodiesel good for 174 hp and 295 lb-ft. The V6 comes with a six-speed automatic, while the diesel gets a six-speed, single-clutch automated manual that can be shifted manually, but does the work itself when left alone.
ProMaster is sold in a single trim, but in three body types (cargo van, chassis cab and cutaway), three wheelbases, four overall lengths and two roof heights.
Standard equipment includes the 3.6L engine and automatic transmission, near-vertical side walls, up to 17 cargo area tie-downs, wraparound front and rear bumpers, cab-forward short dash to front axle, four-piece modular front fascia, 260-degree-opening rear doors, hill start assist, trailer sway control, traction and stability control, six airbags and Brembo four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock.
