Now that the Dodge Grand Caravan-based Ram C/V is no more, the Ram ProMaster City officially carries the flag for affordable commercial vehicles for FCA. Much like its bigger brother, the ProMaster, the ProMaster City started out life as a Fiat product, but has been heavily worked over to suit the needs of North American business users.
Introduced just last year, the ProMaster City is carried over unchanged other than the fitment of thicker carpets to reduce cabin noise, and larger tires (215/55R16) to improve grip.
All ProMaster City models come standard with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder MultiAir engine that develops 178 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. It’s considerably more powerful than the standard engines featured in the Ford Transit Connect and Nissan NV200/Chevrolet City Express. Despite the bigger engine, the use of a nine-speed automatic transmission helps the ProMaster City quell its thirst. Fuel economy is rated at 11.2 L/100 km city, and 8.1 L/100 km highway.
The Ram ProMaster City is offered in cargo van and passenger wagon forms. As a cargo van, it offers customers a class-leading payload rating of 854 kg (1,883 lbs) and a maximum volume of 3,729 L (131.7 cubic feet). Dual sliding doors are standard, while the rear doors are split 60/40 with the wider portion facing the street for easier curbside loading. The rear doors also open 180-degrees. Six cargo tie-down rings are standard in the cargo van; the passenger wagon has four. Passenger wagons also get a fold-and-tumble rear bench seat, carpeted floors, and a full-length headliner.
The Turkish-built ProMaster City starts at $29,995 for the Cargo Van ST, which includes a touchscreen radio, USB port, keyless entry, seven airbags, and air conditioning as standard. The Wagon SLT sells for $31,995.
