History
The Ram 5500 is the top pickup the company offers. It is used almost exclusively by businesses that need the highest payload and towing they can find in a pickup format that will be used day in and day out. If you need more capability, you'll need to step up to a purpose-built Class 6 or higher commercial truck, which means much more size, cost, and complexity.
New This Year
The Ram 5500 was all-new in 2019, upgraded for 2020, and had no changes for 2021.
Available Trims
Ram sells the 5500 in regular and crew cab versions, offered in Tradesman, SLT, Laramie, and Limited trim. It can be ordered with a 6.4L gas V8 or a Cummins 6.7L inline-six turbodiesel.
Standard Features
Ram 5500 Tradesman comes with power locks and windows with one-touch up and down. There are cruise control and AC with a vinyl bench seat and vinyl floors. There's a basic radio but USB charging ports. The dash houses a 3.5-inch vehicle information display.
SLT adds a cloth front bench plus chrome bumpers and trim. It also comes with a 5.0-inch touchscreen and Uconnect 3 infotainment system. Laramie adds a 7.0-inch digital cluster display and chrome, power tow mirrors. That trim also comes with a leather front bench seat with heating. The Uconnect infotainment system is a newer 4C version with an 8.4-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto capability. It also has power-adjust front seats and a power rear sliding window.
Limited adds a chrome billet grille, front and rear park assist, premium leather seats with heating and ventilation in the front row, and a 12-inch infotainment screen with Navigation.
Key Options
Two and Four-wheel drive are available, as is a package for all trims containing more active safety features. A towing group comes with a surround camera view. Other option groups ready the truck for towing, for work as an ambulance, and for other industry-specific uses.
Fuel Economy
The high gross vehicle weight rating of the Ram 5500 means that a fuel economy estimate is not required and isn't given.
Competition
The only other offering in this segment is the Ford F-550 chassis cab, which offers similar features and options.
