2009 Porsche Cayman

For 2009, the Porsche Cayman and Cayman S have been redesigned into their second generation. The 2.7-litre used in the Cayman for 2008 is replaced with a 2.9-litre, while the new 3.4-litre in the S version includes direct fuel injection for more power. The optional five-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission is replaced with Porsche's new PDK seven-speed double-clutch gearbox, while the six-speed manual is improved, including standard start-off assist, and is now used on both engines, replacing the five-speed manual previously found on the Cayman model for 2008.

Other features include an improved Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with larger screen and music player input, an optional six-CD changer now integrated into the stereo instead of a separate unit in the trunk, available adaptive bi-xenon headlamps with LED driving lights, revised suspension tuning, and interior and exterior styling refinements. Styling changes include modified front and rear end, new headlights and rear LED lights, and turn signals integrated into the main headlights. The Cayman S Sport model will be restricted to 700 units worldwide.

Sharing their platforms with the Boxster, but with a fixed roof, the Cayman uses a 2.9-litre horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine, while the Cayman S uses a 3.4-litre six-cylinder. Both mate to a six-speed manual transmission that can be optioned to the new seven-speed PDK double-clutch automatic gearbox.

Features on the Cayman include 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, heated seats, head and thorax side airbags, start-off assist, anti-theft system with interior sensor, keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring system, three-spoke leather-wrapped wheel, power windows, CD stereo, garage door opener, cruise control, locking glove box and storage compartment, heated mirrors, roof rack system installation preparation, automatically-deployed rear spoiler, and fog lamps.

The Cayman S adds 18-inch alloy wheels, red-painted calipers, and aluminum-coloured instrument dials.

The Cayman S Sport model, at $89,100, includes 19-inch SportDesign black wheels, black mirrors and air intake grilles, Porsche Active Suspension Management, bi-xenon headlamps, Sports Chrono Package, sports seats, Alcantara gearshift lever finish and steering wheel rim, sports exhaust system with twin-chamber tailpipe, and numbered glove box plaque.

Available options on the Cayman and Cayman S include adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, separate LED daytime driving lights, ventilated seats, navigation system, Bluetooth preparation kit, Porsche Active Suspension Management, and a Sports Chrono Package.

The makeover turns the beautifully-styled Cayman into even more of a driver's car; those who prefer the smaller engine now receive a six-speed manual, and both can be optioned to the superior seven-speed PDK. Styling refinements improve the Cayman's appearance without changing its trademark face, while new features inside make it even more inviting. Prices rise less than one per cent from the 2008 levels.
