An all-new model in 2006, the Cayman S is joined by the new Cayman for 2007. The Cayman S receives new optional 19-inch wheels.
The Cayman shares features with the Boxster, including its 2.7-litre six-cylinder engine, while the Cayman S is based on the Boxster S. As with the Boxster, the Cayman comes with a five-speed manual transmission, the Cayman S with a six-speed manual; the Cayman can be optioned to a six-speed manual, while both can be outfitted with a five-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission with manual mode.
Both models have chassis and suspensions based on the Boxster, but are slightly larger and have extra rigidity from their fixed roofs.
Features on the Cayman include 17-inch alloy wheels, summer performance tires, tire pressure monitoring system, side windows with water-repellent coating, automatically-extending rear spoiler, front and rear fog lamps, power windows, heated washer nozzles, anti-theft system, garage door opener, cruise control, CD player with four speakers, electric seatback adjustment, climate control, and leather-wrapped wheel.
The Cayman S adds 18-inch alloy wheels with summer performance tires, red brake calipers, and CD player with nine speakers.
With the introduction of the Cayman, Porsche now mirrors the Boxster range with hardtop styling (and is perhaps the only manufacturer to charge less for the drop-top version of a model). The styling is wonderful and both are deliciously quick, with all the driving experience of the Boxster sibling. Prices are between the Boxster and Carrera, but it doesn’t take many options to get very close to 911 territory.
