History/Overview
The Boxster is Porsche's latest effort at a more affordable sports car to sit alongside the 911 at dealers, and since it's been on sale for more than 20 years, it's now definitely their most successful at the job. The current 718 Boxster is in its fourth generation and continues to offer an open-top two-seat mid-engine driving experience.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
Just a few years into the latest generation, for 2021 Porsche has added a GTS 4.0 model with a new engine borrowed from the Spyder model.
Available Trims
The 718 Boxster is available in Boxster, Boxster T, Boxster S, GTS 3.0, and 25 Years edition. Boxster and T get a 2.0L turbo flat-four making 300 hp, S gets 350 hp from a 2.5L turbocharged flat-six, and GTS 4.0 and 25 Years have a 394 hp naturally aspirated 4.0L flat-six.
Standard Features
Boxster offers Bi-Xenon headlights with Porsche dynamic light as well as LED taillights. It has cruise control, dual-zone climate, sports seats with partial leather covering, seat heating, six-speaker audio, and Porsche Communication Management with Apple CarPlay.
T adds torque vectoring including locking rear differential, Sport Chrono Package with new driving modes and Sport Plus mode, performance display, lowered suspension, Porsche active suspension management, 20-inch wheels, Sport-Tex seats, and Porsche Car Connect.
Boxster S is equipped like the standard model, but offers the more powerful engine and larger brakes. GTS 4.0 adds the 4.0L engine, Sport Chrono Package, torque vectoring with locking rear differential, active suspension with lowered chassis, six-piston brakes, 20-inch wheels, auto-dimming mirrors, special sports seats and steering wheel, and GTS trim.
25 Years is equipped like GTS 4.0, but has special 25 years detailing inside and out.
Key Options
Porsche offers dozens of exterior and interior colour and trim options as well as multiple wheels. The important options include ceramic brakes and adaptive cruise.
A Premium Package includes LED lights, Bose audio, ventilated seats, lane change assist, and heated wheel. Active suspension management is offered as are torque vectoring and Sport Chrono on models that don't come equipped as standard.
Fuel economy
2.0L six-speed Boxter models are estimated to return 11.7 L/100 km city, 8.9 highway with seven-speed PDK 11.0/8.7. 2.5L models are rated at 12.5/9.6 with the stick and 12.2/9.2 with PDK. GTS 4.0 is rated at 14.0/10.0 with a stick and 12.3/9.8 with PDK.
Competition
The Boxster competes with sports cars like the Chevrolet Corvette, Toyota Supra, BMW Z4, and Audi TT.
