2009 Pontiac Torrent

For 2009, the Pontiac Torrent is unchanged, save for the addition of available Bluetooth hands-free connectivity.

Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the Pontiac Torrent is available with a 3.4-litre V6 and five-speed automatic transmission in Base or GT trim, or as the GXP, with 3.6-litre V6 and six-speed automatic with manual shift mode. Both come in front- or all-wheel drive.

Features on the base Torrent include 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, fog lights, power mirrors, roof rack side rails, rear spoiler, variable intermittent wipers, intermittent rear wiper, floor mats, driver information centre, tire pressure monitoring system, tilt wheel, power windows with driver's express-down, flat-folding front passenger seat, cloth seats, 60/40 split-folding sliding and reclining rear seats, CD/MP3 stereo, electric power steering, power locks with keyless entry, automatic headlamps, anti-theft alarm, and OnStar.

The GT adds privacy glass, roof rack cross bars, cargo net, cruise control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather-wrapped wheel with audio controls, premium cloth seats, six-way power driver's seat, rear seat centre armrest, speed-compensated stereo volume control, and extended-range keyless remote.

The GXP adds 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles, heated GXP-specific bolstered front seats, performance suspension, hydraulic power steering, and remote starter.

Sportier than the Equinox, the Torrent rides and handles very well for an SUV, especially when ordered as the sport-tuned GXP. Its rear multi-position seat slides ahead or back to maximize legroom or cargo space, and the fold-flat front seat adds to its versatility, especially with its plastic backing. Depending on the model, available options include a sunroof, premium sound system, a rear-seat DVD system, XM satellite radio, curtain airbags, and a three-position rear shelf that can be used as a cargo cover or a table.
