For 2008, the Pontiac Torrent gains a new model, the performance-oriented GXP, available in front- or all-wheel drive. The new model includes a 3.6-litre V6 engine with variable valve timing, six-speed automatic transmission, performance-tuned suspension and hydraulic power steering.
It joins the Torrent and Torrent GT models, which use a 3.4-litre V6 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, and are available in front- or all-wheel drive. The Sport trim line has been discontinued.
Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox ? but no longer with the redesigned Saturn Vue ? the Torrent's all-wheel drive runs primarily in front-wheel but transfers torque to the rear when it detects wheel spin.
Features on the base Torrent include 16-inch aluminum wheels, air conditioning, fog lamps, power mirrors, roof rack side rails, rear spoiler, variable intermittent wipers, intermittent rear wiper, front console, floor mats, driver information centre, tilt wheel, power windows, fold-flat front passenger seat, 60/40 split folding sliding rear seat, CD stereo, electric power steering, power locks with keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring system and OnStar.
The GT adds deep-tinted glass, roof rack crossbars, cargo net, cruise control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, premium cloth seats with six-way power driver's adjustment, rear centre armrest with cupholders, and CD/MP3 stereo.
The GXP adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, chrome door handles, heated seats with lateral support bolsters, remote starter, and sport suspension with hydraulic power steering. Roof rack crossbars are optional.
Sportier than the Equinox, the Torrent rides and handles like a big car, and now offers a sport-tuned version that puts it in line with Pontiac's family of GXP lines. It's useful, too, with a rear multi-position seat that slides ahead or back, to maximum legroom or cargo space, and a fold-flat front seat for extra-long cargo. Available on all models is a multi-level cargo area panel system with a three-position shelf that can be used as a cargo cover or a table to maximize the Torrent's usefulness as a fun, sporty family hauler.
