For 2007, the Pontiac Grand Prix is almost unchanged: there are new 17-inch chrome aluminum wheels; a tire pressure monitoring system becomes standard, replacing the tire inflation monitor system; and there are five new colours: Crimson Red, Midnight Blue Metallic, Shadow Gray Metallic, Purple Haze Metallic and Red Jewel Tintcoat.
The Grand Prix sedan comes in three variations: the Grand Prix, with a 3.8-litre V6; the GT, with a supercharged 3.8-litre V6; and the GXP, with a 5.3-litre V8. All use a four-speed automatic transmission that’s a heavy-duty version in the GXP. The 5.3-litre uses Active Fuel Management, which deactivates half the cylinders under light load for improved fuel economy.
The base model includes air conditioning, fog lights, power mirrors, deck lid spoiler, 16-inch steel wheels, variable intermittent wipers, cruise control, tilt wheel, power windows, cloth seats, 60/40 folding rear seat, CD player with six speakers, four-wheel disc brakes, and OnStar.
The GT adds 16-inch aluminum wheels, tire pressure monitor, folding front passenger seat, cargo net, leather-wrapped wheel with audio controls, six-way power driver’s seat, dual exhaust, remote starter and ABS.
Both the Grand Prix and GT can be optioned with a Special Edition package that includes 17-inch wheels, ground effects, body-colour grille and bright exhaust tips.
The GXP includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, front and rear vented brake discs with cross-drilled rotors, CD/MP3, traction control and a head-up display (HUD) that can be added as an option to other models. The package also includes a retuned suspension with lower ride height, Bilstein gas-charged struts, higher-rate springs, and 17.2 mm hollow rear stabilizer bar. StabiliTrak stability control system and Magnasteer II speed-sensitive steering are standard equipment.
The Grand Prix is an underrated vehicle; it’s been around for a while, but it offers a roomy interior, decent acceleration even on the base model, and a flashy V8 model that’s a serious road rocket. This is a car that can take the family grocery shopping, and still handle itself admirably when it’s time to have some fun.
