For 2009, the Pontiac G6's changes are minor, but the 2.4-litre four-cylinder can now be ordered mated to a six-speed automatic transmission in the SE 4 Cylinder Performance Package, instead of a four-speed, for added fuel economy; the package also includes StabiliTrak electronic stability control, and leather-wrapped wheel with accessory controls. The new Podium Edition Package adds a sunroof, remote vehicle starter, leather-wrapped three-spoke wheel with audio controls, six-way power driver's seat and badges.
The G6 is available as a sedan, in SE, GT and GXP trim; as a coupe, in GT or GXP trim; or as the GT convertible. Four engines are available: a 2.4-litre four-cylinder in the SE sedan; a 3.5-litre V6 in the GT sedan, coupe and convertible models, and optional in the SE sedan; a 3.6-litre V6 in the GXP models; and a 3.9-litre V6, optional in the GT convertible. The 2.4-litre, 3.5-litre and 3.9-litre use a four-speed automatic; a six-speed automatic is standard on the 3.6-litre and optional on the 2.4-litre.
Features on the SE sedan include 17-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, speed-sensitive variable intermittent wipers, black power mirrors, cruise control, floor mats, driver information centre, tilt and telescopic wheel, power windows with driver's side express-down, cloth seats with power driver's height adjustment, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, CD stereo, electric power steering, power locks with keyless entry, automatic headlamps, and OnStar.
The GT sedan and coupe add 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, rear spoiler, cargo net, auto-dimming rearview mirror, compass, front reading lights, leather-wrapped wheel with audio controls, illuminated vanity mirrors, wood accents, premium cloth seats, Monsoon high-performance speaker system, chrome exhaust tip, remote starter, and hydraulic steering.
The GXP sedan and coupe add 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, body-colour power mirrors, unique fascias, heated leather seats, six-way power driver's adjustment, XM satellite radio, dual exhaust, and electronic stability control.
The GT convertible builds on the GT coupe and adds 18-inch alloy wheels, power retractable hardtop, and electronic stability control; it deletes the illuminated vanity mirrors and has seat-side airbags instead of curtain airbags.
The G6's new fuel-efficient available combination of four-cylinder and six-speed automatic should make the sedan even more popular, but buyers can still choose from a wide range that takes them from economy starter kit to racy GXP.
The sedan has long rear doors that make it easy to access the rear seats, but be careful if passengers get out in tight parking lots. The coupe and convertible are more 2+2 design, with very little rear legroom. The convertible is a sharp looker, but it feels flimsy and exhibits considerable cowl shake; the retractable hardtop divides into panels and automatically stores neatly into the trunk under a metal tonneau cover, leaving a fair bit of storage in the trunk well below it.
