For 2008, the Pontiac G6 line-up has a new model: the GXP, which includes a 3.6-litre V6 with six-speed automatic transmission, leather seats, unique fascias and rocker panels, body-coloured mirror caps and dual chrome exhaust tips. It replaces the GTP, which means that the G6 is no longer available with a manual transmission.
The G6 comes with a choice of four engines. The G6 sedan uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder with four-speed automatic that can be optioned to a 3.5-litre V6. The GT coupe, sedan and convertible use the 3.5-litre V6, with four-speed automatic with manual shift mode. The GXP sedan and coupe use a 3.6-litre V6 with six-speed automatic with manual shift mode. The GT convertible can also be optioned to a 3.9-litre V6 with four-speed automatic, the only model that uses it.
Features on the G6 sedan include 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, power mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, driver's information centre, tire pressure monitoring system, tilt and telescopic wheel, power windows, cloth seats with power driver's height adjustment, CD stereo with auxiliary jack, electric power steering, power locks, automatic headlamps and OnStar.
The SE sedan adds 17-inch steel wheels, cruise control, floor mats, and keyless entry.
The GT coupe and sedan add 17-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps, rear spoiler, cargo net, leather-wrapped wheel with audio controls, premium cloth seats, premium stereo, block heater, chrome exhaust tip, hydraulic power steering, remote starter, and power-adjustable pedals.
The GT convertible builds on the GT coupe and sedan with 18-inch aluminum wheels and StabiliTrak stability control. Its roof is a retractable hardtop that opens and closes automatically, and stores in the trunk; the rear seat is fixed and does not fold.
The GXP coupe and sedan add 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels, automatic climate control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror with compass, heated leather seats with six-way power driver's adjustment, StabiliTrak stability control and XM Satellite Radio.
The G6 covers a wide range, from economy starter kit to racy GXP, and is a fun driver in the larger engines. The sedan's long doors make it easy to access the rear seats, but they can be tricky in tight parking lots. The convertible is more of a 2+2 design, with very little legroom for those in the back seat.
The convertible is a sharp-looking car, but while the sedan and coupe have a fairly rigid frame, the ragtop feels like a coupe with its roof chopped off: it's flimsy and displays considerable cowl shake. The retractable hardtop divides into panels and stores neatly into the trunk under a metal tonneau lid, and while you have to pack your things before you drop the roof, there's a fair bit of storage in the trunk-well under it.
