For 2008, the Nissan Xterra receives new standard and optional features.
Based on the F-Alpha platform that also underpins the Armada, Pathfinder and Titan, the Xterra uses a 4.0-litre V6 engine. The S and Off Road trim lines base with a six-speed manual transmission that can be optioned to a five-speed automatic transmission that's the sole choice in the SE. All models feature four-wheel drive with a switch-operated two-speed transfer case.
Features on the S include 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, tubular roof rack with covered gear box, step rails, heated mirrors, privacy glass, tire pressure monitoring system, power windows, power locks with keyless entry, cruise control, tilt column, variable intermittent wipers, rear wiper, front map lights, cargo net, under-floor cargo storage, Utili-Trak cargo channel system with four adjustable cleats, first-aid kit, eight-way manual driver's seat, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, easy-clean cargo area, anti-theft system and CD stereo.
The Off Road adds Bluetooth hands-free telephone system, fog lights, auto-dimming rear-view mirror with compass, overhead sunglass storage, fold-flat front passenger seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and premium six-CD/MP3 stereo with wheel-mounted controls, auxiliary audio jack and XM Satellite Radio. Unique to the package are an electronic locking rear differential, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers, and skid plates, with step rails removed.
The SE adds 17-inch alloy wheels, trip computer, and satin chrome gauge trim.
Equally at home on pavement, on steep mountain roads or hauling a trailer, the Xterra is more truck than many of its competition, which should make it popular with those who want an SUV with off-road credibility.
