In Canada, the compact crossover segment is going bananas. The top six best-selling SUVs for 2016 all fall into this category, and four of those either have already been through or will very shortly undergo redesigns. In other words, Canadian consumers are snapping up small utes in record numbers and have no lack of quality options while doing so. Here’s one of those redesigned vehicles, the Nissan Rogue. Technically this is more refresh than overhaul, but Nissan nipped and tucked in all the right places to retain the Rogue’s place as a serious contender, especially when weighing the features that tend to be priorities for young families. Chief among those is fuel economy, where the Rogue earns top marks against its major competitors with a rating of 8.6 L/100 km combined when equipped with all-wheel drive. (My real-world figure over the course of a week was 9.7, but I wasn’t on the highway much and, admittedly, I wasn’t trying very hard.)

Issue: On vehicles equipped with a jackknife-type folding key, over time the key blade may not stay locked in the fully extended (open) position. If you drive the vehicle with the key in the partially folded position, you could bump the ignition key and turn the engine off. This can cause a sudden loss of engine power, power steering and power brakes. This could also cause the airbags not to deploy in a crash. Note: This recall only affects vehicles that have an "S" trim level. Safety Risk: Airbags that do not deploy in a crash could create an increased risk of injury. A loss of power brakes can cause a sudden increase in brake pedal force and lead to an increase in stopping distance. A loss of power steering assist can cause a sudden increase in steering effort. A sudden loss of engine power could also increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Nissan will notify owners by mail and advise you not to attach any accessories to the key fob, and to ensure that the key is fully extended before driving. As an interim repair, a dealer will install a fastener in the key slot to prevent the key from folding. Once replacement parts are available, you will need to return to a dealership to have a spacer inserted into the slot of the key fob that will stop if from collapsing.

Issue: On certain vehicles, water could leak into the electrical connections in the driver's footwell. This could cause problems with various electric systems (like the power windows or power seat) and the wiring harness could short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit can create the risk of a fire, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: Nissan will notify owners by mail and instruct you to bring your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the dash side wiring harness. If necessary, they will replace the harness connector. The dealership will also apply grease to the connector to prevent water intrusion. Nissan advises that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

Issue: In certain driving situations, a metal structure like a railroad crossing or overhead sign could cause the Automatic Emergency Braking system (AEB) to activate when it is not needed. If this happens, the system would provide a collision warning. If the driver takes no action, the vehicle could slow suddenly or come to a complete stop. Safety Risk: If the AEB system activates with braking when no potential collision is present, it could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will send a letter to owners to explain this issue. Owners will be informed that a software update is available for the AEB system. This update can be installed at a dealership at no charge to the owner.

Certain vehicles may fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 207 - Anchorage of Seats and CMVSS 210 – Seat Belt Anchorages. The recliner joint on the lower seat frame assembly of the second and/or third row seats may contain inadequate welds. As a result, the seat frames may not meet certain performance requirements of the standards, which could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant(s) in the event of a crash. Correction: Dealers will inspect the seat frame barcode and replace the lower seat frame assembly with a new one if necessary.

On certain vehicles, a defect in the occupant classification system could allow an adult sitting in the front passenger seat to be classified as a child or an “empty seat”. This would suppress the airbag, which could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Correction: For affected Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue and Sentra vehicles, dealers will reprogram the airbag control unit and the occupant classification system control unit. For affected Leaf, NV200, Pathfinder, Q50 and JX35/QX60 vehicles, dealers will replace the occupant classification system electronic control unit.
