For 2007, the Mitsubishi Galant is restyled, both inside and out, and offers a new sporty Ralliart edition that replaces the 2006 GTS.
Styling changes include new front and rear bumper fascias, wheel designs, dark head- and taillamps, new rear spoilers and a smoother appearance with the deletion of body side mouldings; inside, the Galant features new fabrics, steering wheel, door trim and chrome accents. Satin Meisai replaces Titanium exterior shade, and there’s a new colour, Sunset Pearlescent.
New standard features include curtain airbags; standard or available features include auto-dimming rearview mirror with integrated garage door opener, Rockford Acoustic premium stereo, navigation system, and anti-theft alarm.
The Galant comes in ES, LS or Ralliart trim. The ES uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine; the LS uses a 230-hp, 3.8-litre V6, while the Ralliart features a new 3.8-litre that makes 258 hp. The four-cylinder uses a four-speed automatic, while both V6 models use a five-speed automatic; both transmissions have manual shift mode.
Features on the ES include 16-inch steel wheels, variable intermittent wipers, heated mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power locks with keyless entry, anti-lock brakes, side and curtain airbags, and CD/MP3 stereo.
The LS adds 17-inch alloy wheels, colour-keyed mirrors, spoiler, “leatherette” steering wheel, eight-way power driver’s seat, traction control, and tire pressure monitoring system.
The Ralliart adds 18-inch alloy wheels, projector headlamps, fog lights, sport mesh grille, side air dam, front strut tower bar, automatic climate control, aluminum pedals, heated leather seats, wheel-mounted audio controls, auto-dimming mirror with integrated garage door opener, power sunroof, premium sound system, navigation system, and anti-theft alarm system.
The Galant is a roomy car for its size, and feels even more so thanks to its low seating position, although its sloping roof may prove problematic for very tall drivers. As with the GTS it replaces, the Ralliart is the model of choice, offering impressive horsepower and a sport-tuned suspension (although, unfortunately, no manual transmission option). Downsides to the Galant are considerable torque-steer, a wide turning circle, and an interior that looks cheaper than many of its similarly-priced competitors. The aggressive styling, long warranty and numerous features, including a navigation system at this price, are a definite bonus, though.
