All-new in 2004, the Mitsubishi Galant is unchanged for 2005. The big news is its warranty: 2004’s basic 3-years/60,000 km is now 5-years/100,000, while powertrain coverage increases from 5-years/100,000 to 10-years/160,000 km.
The Galant comes with a choice of two motors: a 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 3.8-litre V6. Each comes in two trim lines.
The base four-cylinder DE includes air conditioning, 16-inch steel wheels, variable intermittent wipers, power mirrors, power windows, power locks with keyless entry, and CD player with six speakers.
The upper-line ES adds a sport mesh grille, cruise control, and premium cloth seats; several option packages, including such items as leather interior, upscale stereo, and ABS can only be added to the ES.
The V6 LS model has all of the four-cylinder ES features, plus ABS, traction control and an eight-way power driver’s seat. The sporty GTS adds projector headlamps, fog lamps, heated mirrors, rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, leather interior with heated seats, leather-wrapped wheel, six-CD player with eight speakers and wheel-mounted audio controls, power sunroof, and eight-way power driver’s seat.
The Galant is worthy of a spot among the midsize offerings from other Japanese manufacturers, and some of the domestics as well: it stacks up favourably to the Buick Allure and Chrysler Sebring. The GTS’ heavier-duty stabilizer bars give it the skill to take its 230 horses around corners, and the projector headlamps give it a sports-sedan flair; although its automatic has manual mode, a six-speed would have been nice. The interior looks richer than its price tag, and there’s plenty of room front and back. Still, it’s hard to understand why Honda and Toyota can put ABS into all its Accord and Camry lines, and Mitsubishi reserves it for the upper levels only.
Like all Mitsubishis, the Galant suffers from its company’s uncertainty in the market; it can be difficult to find a dealer, and repairs are often a waiting game on parts. It’s tough to make a dent when your competition’s on every corner.
The Galant is built in Normal, Illinois.
