History/Overview
The current state of North America’s cargo van segment can be credited to this van, which first appeared here as a Dodge following the DaimlerChrysler merger. Those companies have long since split up, so the Sprinter is now sold under its maker’s banner.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
New for 2020 are a number of optional driver assist features. Otherwise, the Sprinter is carried over unchanged following its 2019 redesign.
Available Trims
Mercedes offers the Sprinter in 1500, 2500, 3500 and 4500 trims, each of which boasts increased payload and towing capacity. There are also standard and high roof models, two wheelbase lengths, and an extended body option.
Engine choices are a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder gasser and a 3.0L turbodiesel V6, with nine- and seven-speed transmissions, respectively. Four-wheel drive is available, too.
Standard Features
Every Sprinter cargo van comes with 16-inch steel wheels, black cloth seating, a radio, adjustable steering wheel angle, air conditioning, an electric auxiliary heater, and a passenger-side sliding door.
Key Options
The Sprinter’s options list starts out with alloy wheels and leather upholstery. There are also a number of packages.
Here goes:
An exterior lighting group bundles fog lights, partial LED taillights, LED headlights, and high beam assist.
The driver convenience package brings power-folding side mirrors with heat and electric adjustments, blind spot assist, cruise control, a 12-volt power outlet, and attention assist.
A premium package adds rain-sensing wipers, active braking assist, a 7.0-inch infotainment display, wet wipers, and active lane keeping assist.
Sprinter’s Premium Plus pack gains a leather steering wheel, wireless smartphone charging, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, a colour instrument cluster info display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and traffic sign assist.
A comfort package brings posher seating, while the comfort plus group gets heated front seats with electric adjustments.
Buyers can also add a swivel driver’s seat, and a full window package that puts glass in the side and rear doors.
Fuel economy
You won’t find fuel consumption estimates for the Sprinter because Natural Resources Canada doesn’t require makers of commercial vehicles to provide those figures.
Competition
Mercedes-Benz’s competitors here are the Ford Transit, Nissan’s NV, the Ram Promaster, and GM’s Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana twins.
